Chapter 0278

โ€œYouโ€™re actually buying this?โ€ Zacharyโ€™s voice was sharp, disbelieving.

โ€œPut her down, Zachary.โ€ Alexander commanded.

โ€œYouโ€™ve got to be joking. Look at her.โ€ He gestured to the small girl clinging tightly to him.

I had looked. She hadnโ€™t made a single sound. No tears fell. There was no panic. She had simply listened, absorbing every word, while holding onto the one person she trusted completely.

โ€œZachary!โ€ I didnโ€™t want to pull rank, but I would. I was getting better at it.

He stared at me for a long moment, his jaw tight. โ€œSheโ€™s my kid.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s his, too.โ€

Reluctantly, he lowered her until her small shoes touched the grass. Charlotte gripped his hand, her wide eyes fixed on Lucas. Time seemed to slow as she finally let go. She ran straight into Lucasโ€™s waiting arms.

โ€œIโ€™m here, sweetheart. I found you.โ€ His voice was a soft, reassuring murmur.

Zachary turned to leave. A small voice stopped him. โ€œDaddy, donโ€™t go.โ€

He glanced over his shoulder. โ€œIโ€™m not going far, Lottie. Just checking on Isabella.โ€

Once Zachary was gone, Lucas turned his sharp gaze on us. His question was an accusation. Why had we let a Rogue near his daughter?

โ€œYou called her a Hunter,โ€ Alexander reminded him, a cool smile on his lips. โ€œShe chose him. Heโ€™s her safe person. The only one sheโ€™ll talk to about what happened. Like it or not, heโ€™s part of her life now.โ€

Alexander stepped closer. He gently placed his hands over Charlotteโ€™s ears, blocking the next words.

โ€œPoint a gun at my mate again,โ€ he said, his voice dangerously low. โ€œI will pull your organs out through your ass and make you eat them.โ€

โ€œFair warning. But youโ€™d need to be faster than a bullet,โ€ Lucas shot back, a smirk playing on his lips.

โ€œThen I suggest you never sleep soundly again.โ€

Alexander led the boys toward the house. He wanted me to follow. My feet felt rooted to the ground. I couldnโ€™t look away from the strange Hunter.

โ€œCharlotte, could you go help Alexander?โ€ I asked softly. I hated to separate them so soon. But the way Lucas was staring at meโ€ฆ it felt like he knew a secret.

Sebastian appeared twenty meters away. Alexander must have linked him when I didnโ€™t follow.

โ€œBlondie has been watching for a while,โ€ Lucas noted, not taking his eyes off me.

โ€œHe dislikes that name.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not here to make friends.โ€

โ€œWould you have really shot me?โ€ The question left my lips before I could stop it.

โ€œThe instant your beast broke free.โ€ He gave a single, firm nod.

โ€œIn front of Charlotte?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a Hunter.โ€ His answer was simple, cold.

I paused. I remembered what Zachary had said. Charlotte hadnโ€™t reacted to the slaughtered humans in the bar. Her nightmares werenโ€™t about them. They were about what was done to her.

โ€œThank you for keeping her safe.โ€ His words shocked me. Minutes ago, death felt imminent.

โ€œHow did you know?โ€ I asked.

โ€œThat you were close to shifting? I see it. I see the darkness circling you. My question is, how do you hold it back?โ€

โ€˜What does that mean?โ€™ Nyx pressed, her annoyance palpable. She was always angry, but Lucas provoked something deeper in her.

โ€œWhy do you want to know?โ€ I countered.

โ€œNever seen anyone do it like you. Iโ€™m curious.โ€

โ€œI was given advice.โ€

โ€œFrom the other Rogues? Iโ€™d take that with a grain of salt. Thereโ€™s a difference between them and you. Theyโ€™ve already fallen.โ€

โ€œThey shifted back. Brianna did it easier than Zachary. Theyโ€™ve been fine.โ€

โ€œIn my experience, it never lasts.โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re different.โ€

โ€œKeep telling yourself that. Something will trigger them one day. Something will push them over the edge. They wonโ€™t come back from it.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know them.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve been doing this a long time. Right now, Iโ€™m more concerned about the Rogue whoโ€™s attached himself to my daughter.โ€
