Chapter 0278
โYouโre actually buying this?โ Zacharyโs voice was sharp, disbelieving.
โPut her down, Zachary.โ Alexander commanded.
โYouโve got to be joking. Look at her.โ He gestured to the small girl clinging tightly to him.
I had looked. She hadnโt made a single sound. No tears fell. There was no panic. She had simply listened, absorbing every word, while holding onto the one person she trusted completely.
โZachary!โ I didnโt want to pull rank, but I would. I was getting better at it.
He stared at me for a long moment, his jaw tight. โSheโs my kid.โ
โSheโs his, too.โ
Reluctantly, he lowered her until her small shoes touched the grass. Charlotte gripped his hand, her wide eyes fixed on Lucas. Time seemed to slow as she finally let go. She ran straight into Lucasโs waiting arms.
โIโm here, sweetheart. I found you.โ His voice was a soft, reassuring murmur.
Zachary turned to leave. A small voice stopped him. โDaddy, donโt go.โ
He glanced over his shoulder. โIโm not going far, Lottie. Just checking on Isabella.โ
Once Zachary was gone, Lucas turned his sharp gaze on us. His question was an accusation. Why had we let a Rogue near his daughter?
โYou called her a Hunter,โ Alexander reminded him, a cool smile on his lips. โShe chose him. Heโs her safe person. The only one sheโll talk to about what happened. Like it or not, heโs part of her life now.โ
Alexander stepped closer. He gently placed his hands over Charlotteโs ears, blocking the next words.
โPoint a gun at my mate again,โ he said, his voice dangerously low. โI will pull your organs out through your ass and make you eat them.โ
โFair warning. But youโd need to be faster than a bullet,โ Lucas shot back, a smirk playing on his lips.
โThen I suggest you never sleep soundly again.โ
Alexander led the boys toward the house. He wanted me to follow. My feet felt rooted to the ground. I couldnโt look away from the strange Hunter.
โCharlotte, could you go help Alexander?โ I asked softly. I hated to separate them so soon. But the way Lucas was staring at meโฆ it felt like he knew a secret.
Sebastian appeared twenty meters away. Alexander must have linked him when I didnโt follow.
โBlondie has been watching for a while,โ Lucas noted, not taking his eyes off me.
โHe dislikes that name.โ
โIโm not here to make friends.โ
โWould you have really shot me?โ The question left my lips before I could stop it.
โThe instant your beast broke free.โ He gave a single, firm nod.
โIn front of Charlotte?โ
โSheโs a Hunter.โ His answer was simple, cold.
I paused. I remembered what Zachary had said. Charlotte hadnโt reacted to the slaughtered humans in the bar. Her nightmares werenโt about them. They were about what was done to her.
โThank you for keeping her safe.โ His words shocked me. Minutes ago, death felt imminent.
โHow did you know?โ I asked.
โThat you were close to shifting? I see it. I see the darkness circling you. My question is, how do you hold it back?โ
โWhat does that mean?โ Nyx pressed, her annoyance palpable. She was always angry, but Lucas provoked something deeper in her.
โWhy do you want to know?โ I countered.
โNever seen anyone do it like you. Iโm curious.โ
โI was given advice.โ
โFrom the other Rogues? Iโd take that with a grain of salt. Thereโs a difference between them and you. Theyโve already fallen.โ
โThey shifted back. Brianna did it easier than Zachary. Theyโve been fine.โ
โIn my experience, it never lasts.โ
โTheyโre different.โ
โKeep telling yourself that. Something will trigger them one day. Something will push them over the edge. They wonโt come back from it.โ
โYou donโt know them.โ
โIโve been doing this a long time. Right now, Iโm more concerned about the Rogue whoโs attached himself to my daughter.โ
