Chapter 0299
"Did my darknessโ"
"No." He cuts me off before I can finish.
"Did something happen?" Athena had confirmed there were no casualties.
"Stop worrying about my problems, Athena."
"Is Charlotte alright?"
"Charlotte is perfectly fine. Drop it!" He resumes walking, forcing me to sprint to match his pace.
"What's wrong?" Something terrible must have occurred, but Lucas was more than capable of handling himself. I'd witnessed his skills multiple times.
He halts abruptly. "I came here to complete a job. That job remains my priority. I'll assist you with this other issue. After that, Charlotte and I are leaving." He glares upward at the sky. "You're testing my patience!"
I consider asking who he's addressing, but decide against it. When Lucas starts moving again, I remain rooted in place.
'He's planning to kill us all.' Nyx whispers. 'Secrets are easier to keep when you eliminate the witnesses.'
I shut my eyes, attempting to block her out, when Alexander's scent approaches me.
He comes up behind me. His hands slide over my hips and interlock firmly. "We'll find a solution to this."
"I hope you're right." I whisper back. "I'm justโ"
"They'll figure it out. We'll figure it out."
"It's not that. Lucas is acting strange."
"Luc is always strange." He presses his lips against my neck.
"Stranger than usual." I mutter. Something was definitely wrong.
"Maybe he's irritated because he didn't get to kill anyone today. If he's been hunting daily for twenty years, this must feel incredibly dull for him."
"Well, Charlotte?" I ask as she settles beside me in the office.
"I think I like them."
"Are you certain?"
She studies the women seated across the desk. She licks her bottom lip thoughtfully and nods.
Lucas had nearly broken down the door to drag the man out while I placed headphones over his daughter's ears.
Three weeks had passed since the first Lycans arrived. Now we had several hundred from various backgrounds, and so far, no problems had arisen.
Charlotte leans across the desk, offering stickers to the women who watch her with fascination. "You passed." Charlotte beams at them. "You need to wear these so my Daddy can see."
They raise their eyebrows at her. "You may go." I tell them. "One of the men will show you to your accommodations." I worried about endangering Charlotte by allowing her to meet the Lycans. She was a Hunter's daughter.
"Can I see Daddy now?" She asks while neatly organizing her stickers.
"Lucas isn't back yet, and Zachary is with Isabella." It was often unclear which father she meant, as she called both 'Daddy,' much to Lucas's annoyance. It also made them compete for her attention.
"Is he forgetting about me again?" Her lower lip protrudes.
"No, he never forgot you before. You were just very difficult to find." Her brow furrows. "And he promised he'd return by dinner."
She glances at the clock, though she can't tell time well, and puffs out her cheeks. "Can I go play?"
"Of course." She hops off the chair, abandoning her stickers, and dashes past Brianna entering the room.
Brianna takes the seat opposite me and sighs heavily. She had started visiting the office to sit in silence, especially when we were alone. It took time, but I was finally growing accustomed to Brianna's presence. Though today, she seemed particularly dejected.
