Chapter 0324

Lucas stays silent.

I already know heโ€™s holding back laughter without even turning around.

I hear him lift the body onto his shoulder.

His footsteps fade as he trudges away.

I walk back through the crowd of Lycans toward Alexander.

None of them move.

Maybe itโ€™s fear.

Maybe shame for bringing someone like that here.

I donโ€™t really care.

Alexander slips his hand into mine.

His voice echoes in my mind through our link. How did it feel?

It was necessary.

Thatโ€™s not what I asked.

I meet his crimson gaze.

โ€œIt feltโ€ฆ right,โ€ I say softly.

My eyes drift toward where Brianna had fallen.

Her blood still stains the ground.

โ€œI need to check on her.โ€

Alexander gestures toward the Lycans still kneeling. โ€œWhat do you want to do with them?โ€

I shrug.

I hadnโ€™t planned that far ahead.

โ€œLet me handle it,โ€ he says. โ€œJust release your command.โ€

He presses a kiss to my cheek.

โ€œYouโ€™re sure?โ€

โ€œOf course. I have more experience with this.โ€

I release my hold on them.

Everyone rises slowly.

I hurry toward the infirmary.

I expect to see Isabella inside.

But itโ€™s Theodore barking orders instead.

Zachary sits on a chair outside the room.

His hands are clasped tightly between his knees.

โ€œAre you praying?โ€ I ask.

His dark eyes lift to mine. โ€œSomeone has to listen.โ€

โ€œThe baby?โ€ I whisper.

He shakes his head.

He doesnโ€™t meet my eyes.

โ€œTheodore is fighting for her life,โ€ he murmurs.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Isabella?โ€

โ€œShe refused to help.โ€ Anger flashes in his gaze.

โ€œWhat? Why?โ€

โ€œTheodore is in there with a few others Isabella trained. We can only wait.โ€

That doesnโ€™t answer my question.

โ€œWhy did Lucas do this, Athena?โ€ Zacharyโ€™s voice is strained. โ€œBrianna told me he knew.โ€

If it had been anyone else, Zachary would already have torn out the Hunterโ€™s throat.

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t him.โ€

โ€œOf course it was. Heโ€™s been waiting for this.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t him,โ€ I repeat firmly. โ€œOne of the Lycans took the gun from himโ€”or tried to. Iโ€™m not sure. Lucas was trying to disarm him when it went off. That bullet wasnโ€™t meant for Brianna. The Lycan was aiming at me.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to defend him,โ€ he growls.

โ€œIโ€™m not. Ask Alexander. He saw it happen.โ€

Zacharyโ€™s jaw tightens. โ€œWhere is the guy now?โ€

โ€œDead.โ€

โ€œLucas killed him?โ€

โ€œNo. I did.โ€

His eyes drop to my bloodstained hand.

Then they return to my face.

โ€œThank you,โ€ he says quietly.

I nod.

Theodoreโ€™s sharp commands continue from inside.

It sounds bad.

If she could heal naturally, she would have by now.

โ€œWhereโ€™s Sebastian?โ€ I ask softly.

Zachary points toward the nurseโ€™s station.

A hand is visible from behind the counter.

Sebastian sits on the floor, back against the cabinets.

He is completely still.

No sound.

No tears.

Just the steady beat of his heart.

If he loses Brianna, I know heโ€™ll spiral back into drinking.

His knees are pulled to his chest.

His shirt is soaked in Briannaโ€™s blood.

His eyes lift to meet mine.

Theyโ€™re hollow.

Empty.

As if heโ€™s already given up.

โ€œTheodore will find a way,โ€ I whisper.

I sit on the floor facing him.

โ€œShe was pregnant,โ€ he says hoarsely.

โ€œI know. Iโ€™m so sorry.โ€

He lets out a bitter laugh. โ€œShe hadnโ€™t even told me.โ€

โ€œHow did you find out?โ€

โ€œThe fire. I swept her home after we put it out. There was an untouched test on her table. Several others, too. But they were unreadable.โ€

โ€œIs that why you didnโ€™t question her about the pack run?โ€

He gives me a sad smile. โ€œI thought tonight would be the night she told me. But nowโ€ฆ if she survives thisโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll have to be the one to tell her thereโ€™s no baby. That there might never be one.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œThe bullet tore through her stomach. Like Isabellaโ€™s legโ€”it canโ€™t heal what isnโ€™t there.โ€

His shoulders slump even further.

โ€œYou can feel her,โ€ I say, fighting back tears.

I always got the sense Brianna wanted a family.

She wanted to raise her children differently than her father had.

Her biggest worry was whether Sebastian was ready.

โ€œListen to her body. You know her better than anyone because you can feel her.โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œSheโ€™s barely holding on. I donโ€™t need to be in that room to know Theodore has already restarted her heart twice.โ€
