Chapter 0324
Lucas stays silent.
I already know heโs holding back laughter without even turning around.
I hear him lift the body onto his shoulder.
His footsteps fade as he trudges away.
I walk back through the crowd of Lycans toward Alexander.
None of them move.
Maybe itโs fear.
Maybe shame for bringing someone like that here.
I donโt really care.
Alexander slips his hand into mine.
His voice echoes in my mind through our link. How did it feel?
It was necessary.
Thatโs not what I asked.
I meet his crimson gaze.
โIt feltโฆ right,โ I say softly.
My eyes drift toward where Brianna had fallen.
Her blood still stains the ground.
โI need to check on her.โ
Alexander gestures toward the Lycans still kneeling. โWhat do you want to do with them?โ
I shrug.
I hadnโt planned that far ahead.
โLet me handle it,โ he says. โJust release your command.โ
He presses a kiss to my cheek.
โYouโre sure?โ
โOf course. I have more experience with this.โ
I release my hold on them.
Everyone rises slowly.
I hurry toward the infirmary.
I expect to see Isabella inside.
But itโs Theodore barking orders instead.
Zachary sits on a chair outside the room.
His hands are clasped tightly between his knees.
โAre you praying?โ I ask.
His dark eyes lift to mine. โSomeone has to listen.โ
โThe baby?โ I whisper.
He shakes his head.
He doesnโt meet my eyes.
โTheodore is fighting for her life,โ he murmurs.
โWhereโs Isabella?โ
โShe refused to help.โ Anger flashes in his gaze.
โWhat? Why?โ
โTheodore is in there with a few others Isabella trained. We can only wait.โ
That doesnโt answer my question.
โWhy did Lucas do this, Athena?โ Zacharyโs voice is strained. โBrianna told me he knew.โ
If it had been anyone else, Zachary would already have torn out the Hunterโs throat.
โIt wasnโt him.โ
โOf course it was. Heโs been waiting for this.โ
โIt wasnโt him,โ I repeat firmly. โOne of the Lycans took the gun from himโor tried to. Iโm not sure. Lucas was trying to disarm him when it went off. That bullet wasnโt meant for Brianna. The Lycan was aiming at me.โ
โYou donโt have to defend him,โ he growls.
โIโm not. Ask Alexander. He saw it happen.โ
Zacharyโs jaw tightens. โWhere is the guy now?โ
โDead.โ
โLucas killed him?โ
โNo. I did.โ
His eyes drop to my bloodstained hand.
Then they return to my face.
โThank you,โ he says quietly.
I nod.
Theodoreโs sharp commands continue from inside.
It sounds bad.
If she could heal naturally, she would have by now.
โWhereโs Sebastian?โ I ask softly.
Zachary points toward the nurseโs station.
A hand is visible from behind the counter.
Sebastian sits on the floor, back against the cabinets.
He is completely still.
No sound.
No tears.
Just the steady beat of his heart.
If he loses Brianna, I know heโll spiral back into drinking.
His knees are pulled to his chest.
His shirt is soaked in Briannaโs blood.
His eyes lift to meet mine.
Theyโre hollow.
Empty.
As if heโs already given up.
โTheodore will find a way,โ I whisper.
I sit on the floor facing him.
โShe was pregnant,โ he says hoarsely.
โI know. Iโm so sorry.โ
He lets out a bitter laugh. โShe hadnโt even told me.โ
โHow did you find out?โ
โThe fire. I swept her home after we put it out. There was an untouched test on her table. Several others, too. But they were unreadable.โ
โIs that why you didnโt question her about the pack run?โ
He gives me a sad smile. โI thought tonight would be the night she told me. But nowโฆ if she survives thisโฆ Iโll have to be the one to tell her thereโs no baby. That there might never be one.โ
โI donโt understand.โ
โThe bullet tore through her stomach. Like Isabellaโs legโit canโt heal what isnโt there.โ
His shoulders slump even further.
โYou can feel her,โ I say, fighting back tears.
I always got the sense Brianna wanted a family.
She wanted to raise her children differently than her father had.
Her biggest worry was whether Sebastian was ready.
โListen to her body. You know her better than anyone because you can feel her.โ
He shakes his head. โSheโs barely holding on. I donโt need to be in that room to know Theodore has already restarted her heart twice.โ
