Chapter 0379
Seraphina
I stare at the Lycan in disbelief.
โThatโs not true. You think you know, but you donโt. You donโt know her at all. You havenโt even tried to understand her!โ I defend Evelyn fiercely.
โShould I tell her?โ Zachary asks Alexander. His dark eyes gleam with interest.
โWe wait for Luc.โ Alexander replies with a casual shrug.
My spine goes rigid instantly.
Dread floods my veins.
Of course it would be himโLucas Adler.
Heโs the one who would pull the trigger.
I still donโt get why he didnโt do it when he came to my house.
A sick knot tightens in my stomach.
My human instincts scream at me to run, to escape this uncertainty.
Damn these weak human traits.
โJust talk to her,โ I beg.
Evelyn would despise being locked up, especially after five years of freedom.
โIโm not interested in what she has to say. Not now.โ Alexander states coldly.
I lower my gaze.
Thereโs no way I can overpower these men.
Maybe once I stood a chance, but not anymore.
Arguing feels pointless.
But I have to try.
I need them to see Iโm not a threat anymore.
I clear my throat.
โWhy do you assume she convinced me to come back here?โ
โBecause she did.โ A deep voice sounds behind me.
Then I feel the cold press of metal against my skull.
I shut my eyes and count, waiting.
Will I hear the shot, or will death come silently?
โLuc, lower the weapon.โ Alexander commands.
The gun lifts from my head, but I donโt breathe.
He doesnโt have to obey Alexander.
Hunters work for no one unless they choose to.
He could still blow my brains out any second.
โSpeak.โ Alexander orders.
His crimson eyes unnerve me.
How does Athena stand them?
โAbout what? I told your people everything at the house.โ
โAthena said Evelyn did most of the talking.โ He counters.
โBecause I had already told her everything. Evelyn has a way of making people listen. Especially when my life was on the line, given my past.โ
โBut thatโs not like you, Seraphina, is it?โ Luc sneers. โYou always want to be heard. You always have to get the last word.โ
I bite my tongue.
โThings change,โ I whisper. โYouโve got this all wrong.โ
โNo, you have.โ Luc grabs my chair and spins me to face him.
โYou know what I see. I couldnโt figure her out. Thereโs truth in her words. She phrases things carefully. Sheโs built a front, a strong one, probably worked on it for years. But she has no scent.โ
โNeither do I.โ I snap back.
โYou do,โ he tilts his head, studying me.
I know what heโs doing.
Iโve seen him do it beforeโtrying to see deeper into the soul.
I swallow hard.
Sweat beads on my hairline.
Nervousness is a new feeling for me.
I hate it more than anything.
โYou smell humanโsweat and all. But she has no scent. Thatโs why she stays with you. Your scent is weak, but it can still transfer. She needed it to rub off on her.โ
โWโฆwhat? No, she had her Lycan stripped away, just like me.โ
The Hunter shakes his head.
โNo.โ
โYouโre lying.โ
He smirks and shakes his head again.
โI donโt lie. You should know that by now, Seraphina.โ
โNo one is completely scentless.โ I scoff.
โThatโs where youโre wrong.โ He glances past me, as if waiting for confirmation.
โYou passed two burnt-out cars on your way here, right?โ
I nod.
โThe first looked like the one you and Athena left behind.โ
โThe assholes in the second car had no scent. Nothing. Just like your friend in the dungeon. The problem is, they were Werewolves. It seems theyโve been given something to completely hide their scents. Just like your blonde friend.โ
