Chapter 0379

Seraphina

I stare at the Lycan in disbelief.

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. You think you know, but you donโ€™t. You donโ€™t know her at all. You havenโ€™t even tried to understand her!โ€ I defend Evelyn fiercely.

โ€œShould I tell her?โ€ Zachary asks Alexander. His dark eyes gleam with interest.

โ€œWe wait for Luc.โ€ Alexander replies with a casual shrug.

My spine goes rigid instantly.

Dread floods my veins.

Of course it would be himโ€”Lucas Adler.

Heโ€™s the one who would pull the trigger.

I still donโ€™t get why he didnโ€™t do it when he came to my house.

A sick knot tightens in my stomach.

My human instincts scream at me to run, to escape this uncertainty.

Damn these weak human traits.

โ€œJust talk to her,โ€ I beg.

Evelyn would despise being locked up, especially after five years of freedom.

โ€œIโ€™m not interested in what she has to say. Not now.โ€ Alexander states coldly.

I lower my gaze.

Thereโ€™s no way I can overpower these men.

Maybe once I stood a chance, but not anymore.

Arguing feels pointless.

But I have to try.

I need them to see Iโ€™m not a threat anymore.

I clear my throat.

โ€œWhy do you assume she convinced me to come back here?โ€

โ€œBecause she did.โ€ A deep voice sounds behind me.

Then I feel the cold press of metal against my skull.

I shut my eyes and count, waiting.

Will I hear the shot, or will death come silently?

โ€œLuc, lower the weapon.โ€ Alexander commands.

The gun lifts from my head, but I donโ€™t breathe.

He doesnโ€™t have to obey Alexander.

Hunters work for no one unless they choose to.

He could still blow my brains out any second.

โ€œSpeak.โ€ Alexander orders.

His crimson eyes unnerve me.

How does Athena stand them?

โ€œAbout what? I told your people everything at the house.โ€

โ€œAthena said Evelyn did most of the talking.โ€ He counters.

โ€œBecause I had already told her everything. Evelyn has a way of making people listen. Especially when my life was on the line, given my past.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s not like you, Seraphina, is it?โ€ Luc sneers. โ€œYou always want to be heard. You always have to get the last word.โ€

I bite my tongue.

โ€œThings change,โ€ I whisper. โ€œYouโ€™ve got this all wrong.โ€

โ€œNo, you have.โ€ Luc grabs my chair and spins me to face him.

โ€œYou know what I see. I couldnโ€™t figure her out. Thereโ€™s truth in her words. She phrases things carefully. Sheโ€™s built a front, a strong one, probably worked on it for years. But she has no scent.โ€

โ€œNeither do I.โ€ I snap back.

โ€œYou do,โ€ he tilts his head, studying me.

I know what heโ€™s doing.

Iโ€™ve seen him do it beforeโ€”trying to see deeper into the soul.

I swallow hard.

Sweat beads on my hairline.

Nervousness is a new feeling for me.

I hate it more than anything.

โ€œYou smell humanโ€”sweat and all. But she has no scent. Thatโ€™s why she stays with you. Your scent is weak, but it can still transfer. She needed it to rub off on her.โ€

โ€œWโ€ฆwhat? No, she had her Lycan stripped away, just like me.โ€

The Hunter shakes his head.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re lying.โ€

He smirks and shakes his head again.

โ€œI donโ€™t lie. You should know that by now, Seraphina.โ€

โ€œNo one is completely scentless.โ€ I scoff.

โ€œThatโ€™s where youโ€™re wrong.โ€ He glances past me, as if waiting for confirmation.

โ€œYou passed two burnt-out cars on your way here, right?โ€

I nod.

โ€œThe first looked like the one you and Athena left behind.โ€

โ€œThe assholes in the second car had no scent. Nothing. Just like your friend in the dungeon. The problem is, they were Werewolves. It seems theyโ€™ve been given something to completely hide their scents. Just like your blonde friend.โ€
