Chapter 0232

Athena

Isabella crawls into my bed beside me.

The twins were finally asleep.

I had been enjoying the quiet until she burst into my room.

โ€œItโ€™s good, right? That heโ€™s dead?โ€ she asks.

I shrug slightly.

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

She eyes me with suspicion.

โ€œBecause Seraphina supposedly killed him?โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t it feel too easy for her?โ€ I counter. โ€œZachary tracked him for a full month and still couldnโ€™t finish him. When Gabriel was here, none of us could even touch him. Yet he destroyed so many lives.โ€

โ€œOkay, you have a point,โ€ she mutters.

I still donโ€™t understand any of it.

Or what Seraphina truly wants.

Everyone seems to have a different theory.

Isabella opens a chocolate bar and nibbles on it.

Sheโ€™s thinking hard, searching for the right words.

โ€œMaybe she was helping Julian get revengeโ€ฆ but youโ€™re right. It does seem too straightforward.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s definitely dead, Athena. I saw the color drain from Zacharyโ€™s face. He tried to act tough, but the pain was visible.โ€

โ€œCould they have faked it? Maybe Gabriel is working with them, too.โ€

She shakes her head firmly.

โ€œGabriel killed Sophia. Thereโ€™s no way Julian would ever work with him. And you canโ€™t fake the pain of losing a sibling.โ€

โ€œBut no one expected him to work with a Lycan either. Not after he blamed Alexander for bringing Zachary and Brianna here.โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€ She frowns and offers me a piece of chocolate.

I decline with a shake of my head.

โ€œZachary has a theory,โ€ she says, popping the chocolate into her mouth.

I donโ€™t know how she stays so slimโ€”sheโ€™s always eating.

โ€œTell me.โ€

โ€œHe thinks itโ€™s an attempt to get closer to you.โ€

I snort. โ€œTo me?โ€

โ€œLike some twisted, messed-up plan. He doesnโ€™t know the details, but heโ€™s sure itโ€™s something.โ€

โ€œI think we all agree on that. I might not have seen through things when I was younger, but Iโ€™ve learned. Everyone has an agenda.โ€

โ€œAnd sheโ€™s still with Julian. Knowing my brother, heโ€™s probably told her everything about our packโ€”how it works, all our secrets. He wasnโ€™t supposed to, but that was before he cut himself off from us.โ€ Her shoulders slump.

She wonโ€™t admit it, but she misses him.

Even though heโ€™s become a problem.

โ€œI wish he could see that heโ€™s lost his way,โ€ she adds, staring down at her hands. โ€œAlexander would forgive him. Heโ€™s family.โ€

I donโ€™t tell her what Alexander really said about him.

Forgiveness is the last thing on my mateโ€™s mind.

In fact, heโ€™s mentioned multiple times that heโ€™d let the others tear Julian apart for endangering the pack and our family.

โ€œI donโ€™t think he cares about that anymore, Isabella. Itโ€™s been months.โ€

โ€œMaybe she has some kind of hold over him.โ€ She sounds like sheโ€™s trying to convince herself.

Or maybe Midnight.

I keep my thoughts to myself, shrugging.

โ€˜You should tell her,โ€™ Nyx murmurs.

โ€˜No. Deep down, she already knows,โ€™ I snap back.

I watch Isabellaโ€™s shoulders sink even lower.

โ€œWeโ€™ve lost him for good, havenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. What I do know is that itโ€™s been a long time since we heard anything from him. And the first news we get isnโ€™t even from himโ€”itโ€™s from the Alpha of Crestwood City. He didnโ€™t even acknowledge the death of his own children.โ€

She falls back against my pillows, staring up at the ceiling.

The remainder of her chocolate bar drops to the floor.

A single tear escapes the corner of her eye, tracing a path down to the pillow.
