Chapter 0462

I stood frozen, staring at her in disbelief. "We're cousins."

"Cousins?"

"That's our relation. Your mother was my mother's sister. That's why you carry Alpha genetics."

She crept closer, fingers wrapping around the bars as she studied me. "Did you know her?"

"No."

"Oh."

"She wasn't discussed much. My parents died when I was young, so perhaps I just don't remember. Her name was Amelia."

"Thank you... wait, you keep saying 'was'. She was your mother's sister. Her name was Amelia."

"She's dead."

Her hands dropped from the bars. "That figures. Do you know how?"

"No. The records only showed her birth and death dates."

A slight frown appeared. Her tongue glided along her bottom lip. "There's a reason you're telling me this, isn't there?"

"I want your help to kill your brother."

"What?" she squeaked.

"Should I repeat myself?" I muttered.

"No... I just don't understand. Why would you need my help? You're the Alpha."

"So he won't see it coming."

'Are you seriously trusting this bitch?' Nyx asked.

'No, but I want to see where her loyalties lie.'

Evelyn turned away, facing the back wall of her cell. She was likely speaking with Dakota. Her hands rose to her temples, rubbing them slowly. She turned back to me. "If I do this..."

"I might consider letting you live."

She mulled over my words. "Levi is clever. He's always been prepared. Or perhaps he manipulates everything to work in his favor. I don't know anymore. It seems I was blind to it all."

"You say he's prepared, but will he expect his own sister to betray him?"

Her grey eyes locked onto mine. "I don't know. He's always been in control. But that was before. Now I can't hear him."

"How long?"

"Since Dakota emerged." She paused. "She says she's blocking him."

"Good."

'At least she has some sense,' Nyx muttered.

"Can I ask you something?" Evelyn whispered. "Do you ever get used to the voice in your head? The random sarcastic remarks? Or their annoyed huffs when they dislike something?"

"Never. Wait until Dakota starts humming. It's enough to drive anyone insane. I'll return later."

"Everything alright?" the guard asked, slamming the door shut behind me.

"It will be."

"Such a shame about the packhouse," he muttered as I walked away.

"At least no one was hurt." I smiled at him, but he just stared. Grant usually guarded the gates, not the dungeons. "It's unusual to see you working here."

"I guess they thought I needed a change." He shrugged, but I caught flickers of annoyance. "I don't mind keeping an eye on the bitch down there." He tapped the dungeon door.

'He gives me a bad feeling,' Nyx muttered.

'This is the one who has issues with Lycans,' I replied.

"Do you ever go down there?" I asked Grant.

"Why would I?"

I shrugged. "Curiosity?"

"I'm not curious about those assholes." His eyes widened as he realized what he'd said. "I didn't mean you... just, they... she's wasting space and resources."

'Digging his own grave, isn't he?' Nyx smirked as he stumbled over his words.

"Are we?" I asked. "Are we occupying your home? Are we starving you? Are we killing you off?"

"That's not what I meant," he protested.

"Then what is your problem?" I demanded, stepping closer. "This isn't the first time you've expressed hatred for my kind."

His hand moved toward the blade at his belt, but I was faster. My claws pierced his chest as a loud bang nearly deafened me. A small hole appeared beside Grant's forehead, followed by a trickle of blood. As he stumbled back, my claws retracted, and he collapsed to the ground.

I turned to see Theodore, his hand firmly gripping Liam's wrist. "Can't let the prick kill a pregnant woman, can I?"
