Chapter 0059
โI donโt know their names. But I believe it was a Witch, or perhaps several, who bound her. No one else possesses that kind of power.โ
โThat is precisely why I am asking you.โ
Caleb shakes his head slowly. โI donโt know what you want me to say, Alpha Alexander. There was no mention of any Witch. Dominic worked tirelessly to keep Silver Creek hidden from other kinds. He didnโt allow outsiders in easily.โ
โWhat exactly do you mean by that?โ Alexander demands.
โWhoever bound her as a childโฆ would be the same one who bound her again as an adult.โ
โDoโฆ do you know who heโs talking about?โ I ask Alpha Alexander quietly. Maybe thatโs why heโs been acting so distant.
โNot yet,โ he mutters. He turns toward the stairs and holds out his hand. โCome. Itโs time for your lesson with Theodore.โ
โLesson? Ooh, what are you practicing? Fighting?โ Caleb asks, his fingers curling around the bars. โIs this Theodore handsome too? It gets a bit boring seeing the same faces down here all day.โ
โReading lesson,โ I murmur without thinking.
โItโs about time someone taught you to read and write.โ
โWhatโฆ what did you just say?โ Iโve kept it a secret for so long. Isabella figured it out. I accidentally told Alpha Alexander. But I never told anyone else.
Caleb says nothing. He retreats back against the wall.
โAnswer her,โ Alpha Alexander growls.
โItโs nothing.โ
โHowโฆ how did you know that?โ
โMy person on the inside told me.โ
Alpha Alexander knew I hated talking about it. He knew I would never willingly tell another soul. Even Dominic thought I could read. The truth was, I just learned to recognize things without reading labels.
โYour story is falling apart, Caleb.โ Alpha Alexander paces in front of the cell. โI knew there was something off about you.โ
โHonestly, thatโs what he told me.โ
โHis name?โ
โHe never gave me a name.โ Caleb looks directly at me. โHe was blonde. At least six feet tall. Almost black eyes. Always seemed happy.โ
โYou trusted someone from the pack who wouldnโt even give you their name.โ
โThey didnโt want to be caught.โ
โBullshit!โ Alpha Alexander snaps. โIโve heard lies before, but this is ridiculous.โ
โHeโsโฆ tellingโฆ the truth,โ I mutter, vaguely remembering someone who matched Calebโs description.
โThis guy wouldnโt know the truth if it bit him,โ Alexander says sharply.
โHe didnโt come to the house often.โ It was like an old memory scratching at the back of my mind. Little pieces flickered through. โHe dropped off a list that Marcus had given him. He made a joke about me not reading itโฆ and then read it out loud for me.โ
Alpha Alexander is staring at me intently. โAre you sure?โ
โMy memory is bad. Itโs likeโฆ most of the good stuff from when I was little is gone. I only remember the worst parts.โ The blood-soaked faces of my parents flash before my eyes.
โThatโs what Dominic wanted, Athena. If you remembered all the good things, you wouldโve been a threat. He had to make you weak,โ Caleb mutters.
โAgain, you know a lot for someone who was never in the house,โ Alpha Alexander growls. He grabs my hand and tugs me back up the stairs and out into the cool air.
โI donโt like him!โ he states firmly. โThereโs just something about him that rubs me the wrong way.โ He grabs my shoulders and turns me around. โPartial truths donโt mean heโs telling the whole truth.โ
โYou mean like how youโre not telling me why youโre being so weird?โ
