Chapter 0059

โ€œI donโ€™t know their names. But I believe it was a Witch, or perhaps several, who bound her. No one else possesses that kind of power.โ€

โ€œThat is precisely why I am asking you.โ€

Caleb shakes his head slowly. โ€œI donโ€™t know what you want me to say, Alpha Alexander. There was no mention of any Witch. Dominic worked tirelessly to keep Silver Creek hidden from other kinds. He didnโ€™t allow outsiders in easily.โ€

โ€œWhat exactly do you mean by that?โ€ Alexander demands.

โ€œWhoever bound her as a childโ€ฆ would be the same one who bound her again as an adult.โ€

โ€œDoโ€ฆ do you know who heโ€™s talking about?โ€ I ask Alpha Alexander quietly. Maybe thatโ€™s why heโ€™s been acting so distant.

โ€œNot yet,โ€ he mutters. He turns toward the stairs and holds out his hand. โ€œCome. Itโ€™s time for your lesson with Theodore.โ€

โ€œLesson? Ooh, what are you practicing? Fighting?โ€ Caleb asks, his fingers curling around the bars. โ€œIs this Theodore handsome too? It gets a bit boring seeing the same faces down here all day.โ€

โ€œReading lesson,โ€ I murmur without thinking.

โ€œItโ€™s about time someone taught you to read and write.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ what did you just say?โ€ Iโ€™ve kept it a secret for so long. Isabella figured it out. I accidentally told Alpha Alexander. But I never told anyone else.

Caleb says nothing. He retreats back against the wall.

โ€œAnswer her,โ€ Alpha Alexander growls.

โ€œItโ€™s nothing.โ€

โ€œHowโ€ฆ how did you know that?โ€

โ€œMy person on the inside told me.โ€

Alpha Alexander knew I hated talking about it. He knew I would never willingly tell another soul. Even Dominic thought I could read. The truth was, I just learned to recognize things without reading labels.

โ€œYour story is falling apart, Caleb.โ€ Alpha Alexander paces in front of the cell. โ€œI knew there was something off about you.โ€

โ€œHonestly, thatโ€™s what he told me.โ€

โ€œHis name?โ€

โ€œHe never gave me a name.โ€ Caleb looks directly at me. โ€œHe was blonde. At least six feet tall. Almost black eyes. Always seemed happy.โ€

โ€œYou trusted someone from the pack who wouldnโ€™t even give you their name.โ€

โ€œThey didnโ€™t want to be caught.โ€

โ€œBullshit!โ€ Alpha Alexander snaps. โ€œIโ€™ve heard lies before, but this is ridiculous.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™sโ€ฆ tellingโ€ฆ the truth,โ€ I mutter, vaguely remembering someone who matched Calebโ€™s description.

โ€œThis guy wouldnโ€™t know the truth if it bit him,โ€ Alexander says sharply.

โ€œHe didnโ€™t come to the house often.โ€ It was like an old memory scratching at the back of my mind. Little pieces flickered through. โ€œHe dropped off a list that Marcus had given him. He made a joke about me not reading itโ€ฆ and then read it out loud for me.โ€

Alpha Alexander is staring at me intently. โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œMy memory is bad. Itโ€™s likeโ€ฆ most of the good stuff from when I was little is gone. I only remember the worst parts.โ€ The blood-soaked faces of my parents flash before my eyes.

โ€œThatโ€™s what Dominic wanted, Athena. If you remembered all the good things, you wouldโ€™ve been a threat. He had to make you weak,โ€ Caleb mutters.

โ€œAgain, you know a lot for someone who was never in the house,โ€ Alpha Alexander growls. He grabs my hand and tugs me back up the stairs and out into the cool air.

โ€œI donโ€™t like him!โ€ he states firmly. โ€œThereโ€™s just something about him that rubs me the wrong way.โ€ He grabs my shoulders and turns me around. โ€œPartial truths donโ€™t mean heโ€™s telling the whole truth.โ€

โ€œYou mean like how youโ€™re not telling me why youโ€™re being so weird?โ€
