Chapter 0134

โ€œWhat did you do to her?โ€ Julian demands.

I hadnโ€™t even realized he was awake. I wondered how much he had heard.

โ€œShe begged me. Tried to convince me the people upstairs were deceiving me. Claimed it was her home. That her parents owned the house.โ€ She paused, voice dropping. โ€œOnly looking back do I understandโ€”I didnโ€™t see how sick she was. How frail. The shadows under her eyes. All I saw was the โ€˜liarโ€™ Victoria had warned me about. And I believed every word.โ€

Brianna lowered her head. โ€œShe didnโ€™t fight back. She was too weak.โ€

Listening to her was horrifying. It also revealed how much Athena had kept from me about her past. Or perhaps it was a memory she had forced herself to forget.

โ€œEven now, I still hear the soundโ€”her skull cracking against the wall.โ€

โ€œYou shifted?โ€ Julian asked.

โ€œNo.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œI was just furious. And suddenly, I had the strength of a Lycan.โ€ Her eyes locked on me. โ€œIs she truly alive? Youโ€™re not lying to make me talk?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s alive.โ€

โ€œBut how? She shouldnโ€™t have survived that.โ€

โ€œThe Moon Goddess wills it,โ€ I murmured.

โ€œHow did you know she was an Alpha?โ€ Julian pressed.

โ€œI overheard them talking. I didnโ€™t know what โ€˜Alphaโ€™ meant. Not until I escaped. Not until I met others.โ€

โ€œVictoria kicked you out after?โ€ Julian continued, skeptical.

โ€œNo. I was so disgusted with myself, I ran. I didnโ€™t stop until her voiceโ€”Victoriaโ€™s demandsโ€”faded from my mind.โ€

โ€œWhat about the others?โ€ Julianโ€™s tone was doubtful. โ€œIf you were the first, how are there more in this area?โ€

โ€œWe found each other. Or rather, they found me.โ€

Thatโ€™s bullshit! Titan snapped.

โ€œWere they all bitten by Victoria?โ€ I asked.

She nodded. โ€œFor someone who rarely shifted, she loved creating us.โ€ She glanced toward the broken window. โ€œThe sunโ€™s rising. We should get ready to move.โ€

Brianna headed upstairs. She didnโ€™t seem worried about leaving us alone. Maybe there was truth in her story after all.

I donโ€™t buy it. Julianโ€™s voice echoed in my head. Sheโ€™s playing the victim card. I donโ€™t trust her.

You donโ€™t have to. She said sheโ€™d help us find Sophia. All she wants is money. I can provide that.

Julian frowned. I thought youโ€™d want her dead after what she confessed.

I do. But that wonโ€™t help us find your mate, will it?

โ€œDonโ€™t call her that!โ€ he snapped.

Brianna reappeared, eyeing us suspiciously. โ€œWhat are you arguing about?โ€

โ€œSophia,โ€ I muttered.

She nodded slowly, but her eyes narrowed. โ€œRight.โ€ Her tone made it clear she didnโ€™t believe us.

She dragged a heavy bag down the stairs. It thumped loudly with each step.

โ€œWhatโ€™s in there?โ€ Julian asked.

โ€œWeapons.โ€ Her gaze shifted to me. โ€œWhere do you think they took this girl?โ€

โ€œSomewhere called Shadow Peaks.โ€

She laughed. โ€œShadow Peaks? You packs need better naming skills. But I know the place.โ€

โ€œWhat do you call yourselves? The ones who got away?โ€

โ€œRogues. And we are not a pack.โ€

โ€œRogues?โ€ Julian repeated.

โ€œWe donโ€™t belong. And we donโ€™t want to.โ€ She spat the words out.

โ€œBut youโ€™ll help us?โ€

โ€œAs long as you donโ€™t do anything stupid.โ€ She smirked.

She led us almost a mile from the house to a beat-up car. Tossing her bag into the back, she ordered, โ€œGet in!โ€

Brianna slid into the driverโ€™s seat, gripping the wheel tightly.

โ€œWe donโ€™t have all day!โ€ she snapped. โ€œThe sunโ€™s up. Donโ€™t you want to find your mate?โ€

โ€œGet in,โ€ I told Julian.

He took the back. I sat up front beside her.

She hit the gas, driving like the road was hers alone.

โ€œWill you chill? We donโ€™t need cops chasing us!โ€ I warned.

She grinned, eyes on the road. โ€œNo police out here.โ€

โ€œStop the car!โ€ Julian shouted after thirty minutes.

โ€œBut we need toโ€”โ€ Brianna began.

โ€œI can smell her.โ€

She pulled over. Julian burst out, scanning the area.

โ€œTire tracks,โ€ he muttered, crouching down.

โ€œThat could be anyoneโ€™s,โ€ Brianna said.

He inhaled deeply. โ€œShe got out. She ran!โ€

Julian stared at the cornfield ahead. He moved toward the fence, plucking a stem.

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œDried blood,โ€ he growled.
