Chapter 0178

He denies it with a sharp shake of his head.

โ€œItโ€™s comparable to how long a bitten Lycan has before turning fully Rogue without control.โ€

โ€œShe wasnโ€™t bitten. Yet you still turned.โ€

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s the binding. I donโ€™t have all the answers. But I recognize the signs. Sheโ€™s following the same destructive path I once walked.โ€

โ€œHer anger fuels her. Her hate consumes her.โ€

I turn away, pressing my palms flat against the cold stone wall. My head drops low.

This wasnโ€™t part of the new beginning I envisioned.

We were supposed to leave the past behind. Not resurrect its ghosts.

โ€œShe is your mate, Alexander. Your love for her is undeniable. We all see it. But if we donโ€™t act now, Gabriel will be the least of your concerns.โ€

I turn back to see his deep frown.

โ€œItโ€™s Athena,โ€ he mutters through a clenched jaw. My words were striking a nerve.

โ€œTheoretically, since she was bound, Iโ€™ve been Lycan longer. Trust me, I know what Iโ€™m seeing. Brianna pulled me back from the edge long after Iโ€™d lost myself.โ€

Alexander scoffs. โ€œWhen we first discovered her true nature, do you know what she feared most?โ€

I shake my head.

โ€œBecoming a monster. Ironic, isnโ€™t it?โ€ He folds his arms tightly across his chest. โ€œYou came back from being Rogue. Can you help her?โ€

โ€œI can try. But honestly, Brianna is her best chance. Sheโ€™s the one who saved me.โ€

โ€œAthena doesnโ€™t trust Brianna. That wonโ€™t change overnight.โ€

โ€œThen we must find a way for Athena to accept her.โ€

His gaze drifts back to Ethanโ€™s unconscious form. โ€œDo you truly believe Iโ€™m losing her?โ€

I nod grimly. โ€œThe worst part is, she wonโ€™t even realize it until itโ€™s too late.โ€

When we return to the house, Isabella and Brianna are in the kitchen. Despite everything, theyโ€™re laughing and sharing a tub of ice cream.

โ€œWhere is Athena?โ€ Alexander asks.

โ€œShe went upstairs. She didnโ€™t want to see me.โ€ Brianna sighs heavily. Her desperation to win Athena over was growing more palpable each day. Yet Athena continued to reject every effort.

Alexander nods and leaves, hopefully to have a crucial conversation with his mate.

โ€œDid you talk to him?โ€ Brianna asks around a mouthful of ice cream.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat am I missing?โ€ Isabella frowns. โ€œWe were having a good time until Zachary showed up. Now you both look like youโ€™re carrying the worldโ€™s weight.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ I tell Brianna. โ€œAlexander knows. You can tell her.โ€

Isabellaโ€™s eyes go wide as Brianna explains. Her lips part in shock. She was terrible at hiding her feelings, a trait I found oddly endearing.

โ€œDoes she know?โ€ Brianna asks.

โ€œNot yet. Alexander forbade anyone from telling her. Itโ€™s a messed-up decision, but she is his mate.โ€

โ€œHe wants to protect her,โ€ Isabella sighs. โ€œShe fought for survival her whole life. Now she must fight again.โ€

โ€œThis is different.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ Isabellaโ€™s dark eyes lift to meet mine. โ€œExplain how itโ€™s different.โ€

โ€œThat old life was forced upon her. Thisโ€ฆ this darkness, sheโ€™s choosing it. Slowly. She just doesnโ€™t see it yet.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€ Isabella whispers.

โ€œIt makes her feel powerful. It gives her a deep, violent satisfaction.โ€

โ€œThe tragedy is, if sheโ€™d been raised as a Lycan, she might never have developed this inner void,โ€ Brianna offers Isabella a sad smile.

โ€œThatโ€™s speculation. Neither of us can know what her life should have been,โ€ I snap.

โ€œI canโ€™t lose her too, Zachary.โ€ Isabellaโ€™s plea is raw. โ€œI canโ€™t. It would destroy me.โ€

As she holds my gaze, I feel it. Every emotion she struggles to contain, shimmering just beneath the surface.

Brianna reaches across the table, placing her hand over Isabellaโ€™s. โ€œAthena must want the help. Itโ€™s the only way this works.โ€
