Chapter 0259
Alexander.
โYou see it too, donโt you? You have to. Youโre his brother. His Alpha.โ Isabella leans heavily on my desk, dark eyes burning into mine. Zachary stands behind her, hands resting on her hips in a calming gesture.
โWhich is it? It canโt be both. He canโt be trapped and trying to kill his own Wolfโs spirit.โ
โWhat if it is both?โ Brianna speaks up from the corner chair. She rises, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Her brow furrows deeply. โLike some twisted cry for help. He knows his Wolf and Isabellaโs are twins. Maybe this is his way of asking. Maybe heโs doing it so Seraphina remains unaware.โ
โYes!โ Isabella jabs a finger toward Brianna while glaring at me. โThatโs exactly what I mean.โ
โIsabellaโฆโ Zachary begins.
โNo. I love you, Zachary, but Iโm not giving up on him. My gut says this is wrong. Heโs skin and bones. His speech is off, yet he uses familiar phrases. Even his laugh is different.โ She turns her pleading eyes back to me.
โJulian chose to mark her.โ
โItโs not like youโve never made a mistake. Remember all those women you dragged into contracts before Athena came along?โ She slams her palm on the desk. โWhat if things changed after that?โ
I see Zachary raise an eyebrow in my direction.
I lean back in my chair, studying her. Sheโs begged me for many things over the years. But never like this.
โYouโre the Alpha.โ Zachary mutters. โYour call.โ
My brother has caused endless problems. Iโve bailed him out countless times. For years I tolerated his excuses. I let them slide until my mate entered my life. Even now, heโs still digging himself into holes. Heโs learned nothing.
โHeโs hurt too many people.โ
Tears stream down Isabellaโs face. โYou promised. You promised to look after us. You promised mum and dad.โ
โIsabella, heโs not a child anymore. He hasnโt been one for a long time. Some decisions haunt us forever.โ
โSo youโre giving up?โ
I sigh, crossing my arms over my chest.
โSheโs killing him. I donโt know how, but sheโs killing him.โ She shakes off Zacharyโs hands and storms out. He follows as she stomps up the stairs. Multiple doors slam shut above us.
โShe loves him.โ Brianna murmurs.
โI know. Heโs her brother.โ
โHeโs more than that.โ She frowns. โI know itโs complicated. I know youโll probably tell me to stay out of it. But you must see it. He should have woken long before you threw him in the dungeon. Wolves heal fast. Those with Alpha blood heal even faster. But he didnโt. Thatโs weird on its own.โ
She blows out a breath. โIโm a watcher, Alexander. I observe people. I learn how they operate, how they hide things. Itโs what Iโm good at. Most of the time.โ
โMost of the time?โ
โYeah. Though trying to read Athena is like searching for a needle in a haystack.โ
I laugh. That much is true.
โSomething doesnโt add up.โ
โYou took her mate. Thatโs why she shifted.โ
She raises a brow. โI donโt think so.โ
โZachary said you pushed her.โ
โShe had already shifted long before that. Probably the moment she realized that Iโฆ That I put Julian in the car.โ
I cock a brow at her. Sheโs trying hard to keep her mateโs identity secret. Though Iโm fairly certain I know who it is.
โI already know you had help, Brianna. Honestly, I donโt care who youโre mated to as long as you donโt try to kill him.โ
โWhat if he tries to kill me?โ
โHas he?โ
She scrunches her face like sheโs said too much.
โIs that how you ended up with the mark on your stomach and not your neck?โ
She nods. โHe ignored it for a while. Then he snapped. He attacked. Somewhere in the struggle, he claimed me.โ
