Chapter 0259

Alexander.

โ€œYou see it too, donโ€™t you? You have to. Youโ€™re his brother. His Alpha.โ€ Isabella leans heavily on my desk, dark eyes burning into mine. Zachary stands behind her, hands resting on her hips in a calming gesture.

โ€œWhich is it? It canโ€™t be both. He canโ€™t be trapped and trying to kill his own Wolfโ€™s spirit.โ€

โ€œWhat if it is both?โ€ Brianna speaks up from the corner chair. She rises, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Her brow furrows deeply. โ€œLike some twisted cry for help. He knows his Wolf and Isabellaโ€™s are twins. Maybe this is his way of asking. Maybe heโ€™s doing it so Seraphina remains unaware.โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Isabella jabs a finger toward Brianna while glaring at me. โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what I mean.โ€

โ€œIsabellaโ€ฆโ€ Zachary begins.

โ€œNo. I love you, Zachary, but Iโ€™m not giving up on him. My gut says this is wrong. Heโ€™s skin and bones. His speech is off, yet he uses familiar phrases. Even his laugh is different.โ€ She turns her pleading eyes back to me.

โ€œJulian chose to mark her.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not like youโ€™ve never made a mistake. Remember all those women you dragged into contracts before Athena came along?โ€ She slams her palm on the desk. โ€œWhat if things changed after that?โ€

I see Zachary raise an eyebrow in my direction.

I lean back in my chair, studying her. Sheโ€™s begged me for many things over the years. But never like this.

โ€œYouโ€™re the Alpha.โ€ Zachary mutters. โ€œYour call.โ€

My brother has caused endless problems. Iโ€™ve bailed him out countless times. For years I tolerated his excuses. I let them slide until my mate entered my life. Even now, heโ€™s still digging himself into holes. Heโ€™s learned nothing.

โ€œHeโ€™s hurt too many people.โ€

Tears stream down Isabellaโ€™s face. โ€œYou promised. You promised to look after us. You promised mum and dad.โ€

โ€œIsabella, heโ€™s not a child anymore. He hasnโ€™t been one for a long time. Some decisions haunt us forever.โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re giving up?โ€

I sigh, crossing my arms over my chest.

โ€œSheโ€™s killing him. I donโ€™t know how, but sheโ€™s killing him.โ€ She shakes off Zacharyโ€™s hands and storms out. He follows as she stomps up the stairs. Multiple doors slam shut above us.

โ€œShe loves him.โ€ Brianna murmurs.

โ€œI know. Heโ€™s her brother.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s more than that.โ€ She frowns. โ€œI know itโ€™s complicated. I know youโ€™ll probably tell me to stay out of it. But you must see it. He should have woken long before you threw him in the dungeon. Wolves heal fast. Those with Alpha blood heal even faster. But he didnโ€™t. Thatโ€™s weird on its own.โ€

She blows out a breath. โ€œIโ€™m a watcher, Alexander. I observe people. I learn how they operate, how they hide things. Itโ€™s what Iโ€™m good at. Most of the time.โ€

โ€œMost of the time?โ€

โ€œYeah. Though trying to read Athena is like searching for a needle in a haystack.โ€

I laugh. That much is true.

โ€œSomething doesnโ€™t add up.โ€

โ€œYou took her mate. Thatโ€™s why she shifted.โ€

She raises a brow. โ€œI donโ€™t think so.โ€

โ€œZachary said you pushed her.โ€

โ€œShe had already shifted long before that. Probably the moment she realized that Iโ€ฆ That I put Julian in the car.โ€

I cock a brow at her. Sheโ€™s trying hard to keep her mateโ€™s identity secret. Though Iโ€™m fairly certain I know who it is.

โ€œI already know you had help, Brianna. Honestly, I donโ€™t care who youโ€™re mated to as long as you donโ€™t try to kill him.โ€

โ€œWhat if he tries to kill me?โ€

โ€œHas he?โ€

She scrunches her face like sheโ€™s said too much.

โ€œIs that how you ended up with the mark on your stomach and not your neck?โ€

She nods. โ€œHe ignored it for a while. Then he snapped. He attacked. Somewhere in the struggle, he claimed me.โ€
