Chapter 455
The red surgical light burned like fire.
Scarlett's nails dug deep into her palms. She felt no painโonly the violent hammering of her heart against her ribs.
Sebastian stood motionless at the end of the corridor, his tall frame casting a long shadow. His obsidian eyes remained fixed on the operating room doors.
"Mr. Valdemar..." Scarlett's voice trembled. "Grandmother will be okay... right?"
Silence. His gaze never wavered from those doors.
Inside the OR, tension hung thick as fog.
"BP still dropping!"
"Prep the epinephrine!"
"Clamp! Now!"
Beads of sweat dotted Evelyn's forehead. Her hands moved with mechanical precision.
"Dr. Roland, flatline again!"
"Charging paddles!"
Dr. Harrison smirked against the wall. He'd known this would happen. What could some rookie possibly do for a critical case like this?
"Clear!"
The elderly patient's body arched violently before collapsing back onto the table.
"We've got a pulse!"
"BP stabilizing!"
A collective exhale filled the room. Evelyn's hands trembled slightly, but her gaze stayed steady.
"Continue suturing."
When the lights finally dimmed, every staff member slumped with exhaustion.
"We did it..." A young nurse slid to the floor, tears streaming down her face.
Evelyn removed her mask, revealing a deathly pale complexion. Her lab coat clung to her, soaked through.
"Wheel her out."
The doors swung open. Scarlett lunged forward like an arrow loosed from its bow.
"Grandmother!" She crashed against the gurney, voice shaking. "What did you do to her?"
The medical team parted in silence. Only then did Scarlett see the steady rise and fall of the old woman's chest.
"The patient is stable." Evelyn's quiet voice silenced the entire hallway.
Dr. Harrison's face twisted with fury. His glare at Evelyn burned with venom.
Sebastian finally moved. He strode to Evelyn andโbefore everyoneโpulled her into his arms.
"You did it." His murmur was velvet against her ear.
Evelyn sagged against his shoulder, allowing herself one fleeting moment of weakness.
