Chapter 29

The hallway gradually emptied as Sebastian Valdemar caught up to Evelyn Roland in a few long strides. He stepped sideways, blocking her path, his tall frame casting a shadow over her.

"In a hurry?"

Evelyn stopped abruptly and met his gaze with icy detachment. "Do you need something, Mr. Valdemar? I don't discuss business outside work hours."

"Just curious." A smirk played at the corner of his lips, but his eyes remained sharp as blades. "With your discerning taste, how did you ever settle for someone like Nathan Evans?"

"My personal life is none of your concern."

Irritation flared within her. This man was always so domineering and relentless. She refused to indulge him further. "It's ancient history. Not worth mentioning."

Sebastian's interest only deepened. "Your expression says otherwise."

Leaning closer, he lowered his voice. "If you're truly over him, prove it. Attend the engagement next door. A proper ex should be like the deadโ€”silent and gone. Treat it as some stranger's wedding."

"How childish." She rubbed the faint red mark on her wrist, meeting his mocking gaze.

His eyes seemed to taunt her: See? You're still hung up on him.

Evelyn felt as though she'd swallowed something vile. "You're revolting."

"Well?" He arched a brow.

"Fine!" She shoved past him, storming toward the adjacent banquet hall.

Sebastian followed at a leisurely pace, his gaze fixed on her rigid posture.

Evelyn's chest tightened as she pushed open the doors. Guests turned in surprise, though decorum kept them from approachingโ€”until Sebastian appeared.

The atmosphere instantly buzzed with energy.

"Mr. Valdemar! What a surprise to see you here!"

"Mr. Valdemar, remember me? From last night's dinnerโ€”"

Sebastian barely spared the manโ€”some forgettable businessman from yesterday's gatheringโ€”a glance before nodding dismissively.

Yet the man persisted, desperate to ingratiate himself. Others soon swarmed around them, transforming the intimate engagement party into a networking event.

Nathan Evans and Victoria Lowell's smiles froze the moment they spotted Evelyn. Victoria clutched her silk dress so tightly her nails nearly tore through the fabric.

Standing beside Sebastian, Evelyn drew just as much attention. Murmurs spread among the guests:

"Is that Mr. Valdemar's companion? They make a striking pair."

"That's KL Design Group's lead designer, isn't she? So young and accomplished..."

Victoria forced a saccharine smile as she dragged Nathan through the crowd. "How thoughtful of you to attend our engagement, Evelyn." Her voice dripped honey, but her eyes gleamed with venom.
