Chapter 44
Hannah trembled as she handed her phone to Evelyn Roland. The numbers on the screen were staggering.
Evelyn only needed one glance before a cold smirk curled her lips.
"Child's play."
Hannah's eyes widened. "You...you can fix this?"
"Obviously." Evelyn's fingers flew across the keyboard. An address popped up moments later. "Your father only borrowed 100K. One month later, it ballooned to 5 million. Textbook loan shark operation."
Before Hannah could process it, Evelyn dragged her out of the office.
Three phone calls later, they stood before a shabby storefront labeled "Financial Consulting." Five burly men with full sleeve tattoos were already waiting.
Hannah instinctively stepped backโuntil the lead thug respectfully offered Evelyn a cigarette.
She lit it between her lips, squinting through the smoke.
"Wreck it."
The men kicked in the glass door. The crash made everyone inside jump.
"Which idiot thought they could run a loan shark ring here? Get out!"
Ten minutes later, Hannah stared at her bank notification, fingers shaking.
The smug loan shark who'd been sneering earlier now knelt on the floor, sobbing.
Evelyn lounged in the manager's chair, black leather jacket gleaming under the lights. She planted one boot on the man's back, her gaze sharp as a blade behind her shades.
"Heard you're good with numbers?"
The manager opened his mouthโonly to get punched in the face. The others immediately dropped to their knees.
"We'll return everything! All the documents! Please, no more!"
Not only did they return every cent, they voluntarily handed over all their illegal records.
Hannah's jaw dropped at the sudden role reversal.
Evelyn was already spritzing perfume with a frown, disgustedly shrugging off her studded jacket.
"Um..." Hannah ventured softly.
"Hmm?"
"Do you have some secret identity?" Hannah's eyes sparkled. "That was insanely cool!"
Evelyn chuckled. "To deal with thugs, you have to out-thug them."
Hannah suddenly hugged her, tears soaking Evelyn's shirt. "Thank you...really, thank you..."
Evelyn patted her back, unaware of the figure lurking around the corner.
Zachary Merouin held his breath, phone camera trained on them. He'd been recording since Evelyn stormed the office.
When the sent notification chimed, his fingers trembled with excitement.
"Mr. Valdemar, you'll want to see this."
