Chapter 276

Sebastian's hand hung frozen in midair, his knuckles white as bone. The gruesome wound on his hand wept crimson, droplets splattering onto the floor.

In silence, he scooped up the unconscious Olivia and strode toward the exit. The servants had already whisked Theodore to safety, leaving only wreckage and Howard's barely breathing form in the living room.

The hospital corridor reeked of antiseptic.

When the operating light flickered on, Sebastian slammed his back against the wall. He stared at his bloodstained handsโ€”the dark stains looked like indelible proof of his sins.

Evelyn stood nearby, the metallic tang of exertion still clinging to her throat.

She'd never seen Sebastian like thisโ€”the always-composed man now curled in the corner like a wounded beast, his shoulders heaving violently.

"Olivia will be fine." Kneeling, she began wiping the blood from his hands with a damp cloth.

Sebastian's head snapped up. His bloodshot eyes burned into hers, desperate for reassurance.

Then he yanked her into his arms.

"I can't lose her." His voice was raw, his breath scorching against her neck.

Evelyn stiffened briefly before returning the embrace. "I promise," she whispered. "Even if Death comes, I'll drag her back."

The hallway lights flickered.

His grip tightened until Evelyn gently pushed away. "Let me check inside." She nodded toward the OR. "I know the director."

Sebastian released her slowly, clarity returning to his gaze. "Howard..." he rasped.

"Leave him to me." Squeezing his hand, she added, "Olivia needs you strong."

The contact made them both freeze.

Suddenly he pulled her back into a crushing embrace. Evelyn felt his heart hammering against her.

"I'll be right back," he murmured, his warm breath grazing her ear.

She watched him disappear down the corridor. The OR light still glowed. Taking a deep breath, Evelyn turned and pushed through the staff entrance.
