Chapter 230

Edward Roland set down the financial magazine, his eyes crinkling with amusement. "That incident at the vineyard would've given anyone a migraine. Yet you handled it flawlessly."

Sophia Roland gazed at her daughter's delicate profile, a pang of sorrow tightening her chest. She'd missed twenty years of this child's life. Now reunited, the girl stood before her as a fully capable woman.

"Evelyn, I'm so proud of you."

Her fingers trembled slightly as she tucked a stray lock behind Evelyn's ear. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the trio in golden warmth.

Evelyn's lips curved upward at her parents' approving expressions.

"Thank you, Mom. Dad."

"Sweetheart, no need for formalities with us."

Sophia chuckled, patting her daughter's shoulder. But Evelyn flinchedโ€”just for a split secondโ€”before schooling her features. The sudden pallor didn't escape notice.

"You're hurt?"

Evelyn's breath hitched. She quickly tucked her wrist deeper into her sleeve. "Just a minor fall. Already seen the doctor."

Edward stood abruptly, teacup clattering. "We're taking you to Massachusetts General for a full examination."

"Really, I'm fine." Evelyn caught her mother's hand, swinging it playfully. "Your daughter knows how to take care of herself now."

She moved behind Sophia, kneading her shoulders gently. "You're the one who's been worrying over the vineyard, aren't you?"

Sophia's eyes glistened. "I just hate seeing you bear everything alone."

"I'm a Roland." Evelyn winked. "Anyone who messes with me answers to you two first."

Laughter bubbled through the drawing room. The sound floated up the spiral staircase like shards of glass to Isabella Langley's ears.

At the landing, her nails dug crescent moons into her palms. The cozy scene below burned her visionโ€”and her pride.

Why?

Why did this interloper waltz in and steal everything that rightfully belonged to her? Even that man had fallen under Evelyn's spell.

Isabella's chest heaved as she glared at the figure below. Her skirt snapped like a whip as she spun away.

Just you wait, Evelyn Roland.

Downstairs, Evelyn hesitated before speaking. "Mom, Dad... There's something I need to discuss. I might not be home much in the coming days."
