Chapter 139

Alexander Roland's slender fingers tapped lightly on his phone screen as he displayed the police investigation report to Evelyn Roland.

"The surveillance footage confirms the contractor acted alone," he said in a low voice. "And the worker who killed him has already confessed."

With irrefutable evidence, the incident at the Colorado Mines was officially closed. Isabella Langley remained perfectly untouched.

Evelyn's nails dug into her palms. Those desperate moments in the mine, the terror of nearly losing her lifeโ€”all brushed aside so casually.

"A project manager who doesn't even know what his subordinates are doing," she sneered. "The Valdemar Group's hiring standards are truly eye-opening."

Isabella's eyes instantly reddened as she lowered her head, twisting her fingers. But in the shadows, her nails bit deep into her flesh.

The air in the hospital room turned icy.

Sophia Roland quickly stepped forward, taking both daughters' hands. "Evelyn, Isabella went to the mines to look for you. She was worried too."

She gently stroked their hands. "I just want both of you safe."

Evelyn turned her face away, saying nothing more.

A sharp knock interrupted the tension.

When Sebastian Valdemar entered, he immediately sensed the strange atmosphere. His gaze swept past everyone and landed on Evelyn in the hospital bed.

"Mr. Valdemar," Alexander acknowledged with a slight nod.

Isabella's eyes brightened, her voice softening instantly. "Sebastian..."

She deliberately raised her bandaged arm, exposing more of her injuries. "I'm fine. It doesn't hurt..."

Sebastian paused mid-step.

Suddenly, he leaned down, his lips nearly brushing her ear. The intimate proximity made Isabella's heart race.

"That day in the mine," he whispered, so softly only she could hear, "were you trying to bury me alive too?"

Her pupils constricted violently.

Straightening, Sebastian watched with satisfaction as her face drained of color. When he turned toward the hospital bed, his expression was coolly detached once more.

"Miss Roland, how's your recovery?"

"Still breathing," Evelyn replied flatly.
