Chapter 149
Mr. Joy's grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly.
The rearview mirror reflected the tense faces of Edward and Sophia Roland. Since the mining incident, the couple hadn't slept peacefully.
"Madam, we're approaching Stanford University," Mr. Joy reminded softly.
Sophia twisted her Hermes scarf in her hands. Their daughter had refused their calls for seven straight days, always claiming to be busy.
"Drive faster, Joy," Edward checked his watch impatiently. "Evelyn's class will end soon."
A commotion erupted on campus.
"They say Celadon studies here!"
"Someone from the design departmentโEvelyn Roland..."
Mr. Joy's expression darkened. He immediately called security. "Send backup. Miss Evelyn might be in danger."
The Lowell family had cornered Evelyn on a secluded path.
"Who do you think you are?" Victoria sneered. "Changing your identity won't change anything."
Margaret added with venom, "Don't forget who raised you."
Vincent was mid-rant when Mr. Joy arrived with four bodyguards. "Fifty designs? You should be grateful for the opportunity!"
"How dare you!" Mr. Joy snapped.
Victoria eyed the well-dressed man and laughed. "Evelyn, where'd you hire this actor from?"
Adjusting his tie, Mr. Joy replied coldly, "Mind your language."
Two Maseratis roared to a stop nearby. Victoria's smirk vanished when the doors opened.
Sophia rushed to Evelyn, tears streaming. "Sweetheart, I was wrong..."
Her trembling hands cupped Evelyn's face. "You've lost weight. Have you been eating properly?"
Edward stood nearby, red-eyed. The formidable tycoon looked like a chastened child. "Evelyn, punish us however you want..."
Vincent paled.
He recognized the limited-edition sports carโfeatured in last week's finance magazine as one of only ten worldwide. And these people... They were the heads of Roland Group!
"M-Mr. Roland?" Vincent's voice shook.
Margaret suddenly gasped, realization dawning. Now she understood why the Rolands had crushed the Lowellsโthey'd harmed their heiress.
Mr. Joy's icy gaze swept over the trio. "Shall I explain the prison sentence for defamation?"
The Maserati's engine purred mockingly at the Lowells' stupidity.
