Chapter 109
Evelyn Roland stepped out of the library with a stack of heavy textbooks in her arms. The autumn sunlight filtered through the plane trees, casting dappled shadows on her.
As she turned the corner of the academic building, hurried footsteps echoed behind her.
"Evelyn!"
Nathan Evans caught up in a few quick strides, his tailored suit starkly out of place on campus. His eyes burned with intensity as they landed on her books, his face lighting up with surprise.
"You go to school here?"
Evelyn paused, her brows knitting the moment she recognized him. She took a subtle step back, maintaining a safe distance.
"What do you want?"
Her tone was icy, as if addressing a stranger.
A flicker of irritation crossed Nathan's face before he smoothed it into a gentle expression. He knew girls like herโnaive and easily swayed by sweet words.
"It was all a misunderstanding. Just give me a chance to explain."
He lowered his voice deliberately, eyes pleading.
"Unnecessary."
Evelyn turned to leave, but Nathan blocked her path. She sidestepped his reaching hand with practiced ease, disgust flashing in her eyes.
"Evelyn, you used to love me..."
"Love?" She let out a cold laugh. "You flatter yourself, Mr. Evans."
It had all been an act for Grandpa Charles' sake. Now that even his keepsakes had been desecrated by the Lowells, why should she spare their dignity?
Nathan's face darkened, but before he could react, a shrill voice cut through the air.
"Evelyn Roland! Have you no shame?"
Victoria Lowell stormed over in towering stilettos, latching onto Nathan's arm. Her glare was razor-sharp as she raised her voice theatrically.
"We're getting married, and you're still chasing my fiancรฉ?"
Passing students slowed to watch.
Emboldened by the audience, Victoria jabbed a finger at Evelyn. "A stray dog kicked out by the Lowells, now turned homewrecker?"
She suddenly cradled her flat stomach, announcing haughtily, "I'm pregnant! Stay away from Nathan!"
Evelyn's gaze lingered briefly on Victoria's abdomen, her lips curling in derision. As a medical student, she saw through the lie instantlyโthe taut stomach, heavy perfume, and those precarious heels all betrayed the pathetic ruse.
It seemed the Lowells were truly desperate, resorting to such cheap tricks.
