Chapter 93
Nathaniel didnโt understand why his grandmother had suddenly brought this up. The question caught him off guard, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Eleanorโs tone was light, almost teasing. "I just had a video call with Evelyn. Sheโs still at the studio. Why didnโt you pick her up on your way home?"
Nathaniel exhaled, keeping his voice steady. "Iโll go get her now."
"You should hurry. The roads are busy this time of night. Take her to dinner somewhere nearby before heading back."
"Grandmother, how have you been?"
"Iโm perfectly fine," she huffed. "If you and Evelyn would just give me a great-grandchild, Iโd live another twenty years. Now stop dawdling and go fetch her. Youโre irritating me just standing there!"
The call ended abruptly.
Nathaniel blinked at his phone, but a small smile tugged at his lips. At least her sharp temper meant she was in good health.
He checked his watchโlater than heโd realized. Was Evelyn still working?
Grabbing his coat, he strode out the door.
At the studio, Evelyn sat hunched over her computer, fine-tuning a design.
The client had been particularly demanding. The initial draft wasnโt enough, and they needed revisions immediatelyโtheir renovation timeline couldnโt wait.
The office was silent, empty except for her.
"Evelyn? Still here?"
She turned to see Jonathan stepping inside. "Jonathan? What are you doing here?"
"Forgot some files. Didnโt expect to see you burning the midnight oil."
She smirked. "I take my work seriously. Once school starts, I wonโt have this kind of time anymore."
Jonathan leaned against her desk, arms crossed. "Iโve got some things to wrap up too. We can leave together when youโre done."
Evelyn nodded absently, her focus already back on her screen.
An hour later, she finally sent off the final draft and stretched, her neck stiff.
Her stomach growled loudly.
She placed a hand over her abdomen, whispering, "Sorry, little one. Mommyโs going to feed us soon."
Jonathan appeared beside her, resting a hand on the back of her chair. "Finished?"
"Yeah. Letโs go."
She stood quickly, putting space between them.
Jonathan didnโt react, simply pulling back as they headed for the elevator.
"Congratulations on going back to school, Evelyn. If you ever need helpโwith anythingโjust ask."
She smiled politely. "Thanks, but Iโm managing fine."
"I mean it. You donโt have to handle everything alone. Iโm your senior, after all."
Her smile tightened. "Thatโs kind of you. No wonder your studio has such a good reputationโyou really look out for your team."
Jonathan caught the subtle deflection and chuckled. "Itโs late. Let me drive you home."
"No need. Iโll grab a cab."
"You just praised my leadership. If I let you take a cab alone this late, what would people say?" He smirked. "Wait here. Iโll pull the car around."
Evelyn sighed but relented.
As she stood outside, a sleek black Maybach rolled into view.
For a second, her breath hitchedโit looked just like Nathanielโs car. But he wouldnโt be here now, would he?
Before she could dwell on it, Jonathanโs car pulled up beside her.
"Evelyn," he called. "Get in."
