Chapter 147

Evelyn was still torn. After all, Nathaniel had nearly come to blows with Daniel back at the auction house.

When Nathaniel rushed her to the hospital after she fainted from illness, even Julian had suspected he was the father of her child.

Things would get complicated if Julian found out her friendโ€™s grandmother was Eleanor.

She sighed. This was a mess.

"Evelyn, whatโ€™s wrong?" Julian set down his fork, noticing her troubled expression.

"Is there something you canโ€™t tell me? Does your friend need financial help?"

"No, itโ€™s not that."

Nathaniel certainly didnโ€™t lack money.

After a brief hesitation, Evelyn asked, "Julian, will you help me no matter what?"

"Of course. Youโ€™re my sister."

Heโ€™d always stand by her. If it was something beyond his control, heโ€™d move heaven and earth to find a solution.

Seeing the conflict in her eyes, he ruffled her hair gently.

"Relax. Just tell me which hospital your friendโ€™s grandmother is at. Iโ€™ll go with you to check on her."

"Thenโ€ฆ could you ask if the doctor can perform the surgery?"

"Sure. Get some rest now, Evelyn."

She stood and retreated to her room, her mind racing. Should she tell Julian the truth? Would Nathaniel even approve of her interference?

He might accuse her of meddlingโ€”or worse, assume she was just trying to win Eleanorโ€™s favor.

Covering her face with her hands, she forced herself to stop overthinking. For now, sheโ€™d leave it be.

The next morning, Evelyn woke to a dull ache in her abdomen. She couldnโ€™t pinpoint what was wrong, but the discomfort lingered.

Fearing for the baby, she immediately called Julian.

"Julian, my stomach hurts."

Alarm sharpened his voice. "Where are you? Do you need me to come get you?"

"Iโ€™m on my way to you. Maybe Iโ€™m just paranoid."

"Evelyn, if something feels off, you need to go to the hospital. Youโ€™re pregnantโ€”you canโ€™t take risks."

She agreed. Hailing a cab, she headed straight there.

Julian was already waiting at the entrance.

"The doctorโ€™s ready. Letโ€™s get an ultrasound to rule out any issues."

Her nerves tightened as she underwent the scan, but the results came back clear.

The obstetrician adjusted her glasses. "The babyโ€™s growth might be putting pressure on your uterus, or stress could be a factor. You need to relax."

Evelyn had been agonizing over Eleanorโ€™s surgery.

Exiting with the report, she realized Julian had vanished.

A text blinked on her phone:

Emergency patient. Wait for me when youโ€™re done.

Tucking the report into her bag, she headed to the first-floor lounge. The elevator doors slid openโ€”and there stood Victoria.

Instinctively, Evelyn clutched her bag tighter. The last thing she needed was Victoria snooping into her medical records.

"Evelyn? What are you doing here?" Victoriaโ€™s eyes narrowed in surprise.

Evelyn kept her tone flat. "Do I need permission to visit a hospital?"

She brushed past, but Victoria darted after her.

"Wait! You should knowโ€”my family approved my engagement to Nathaniel. Thereโ€™s nothing standing in our way now. So give up. Youโ€™ve already lost."

Evelyn froze.

"If thatโ€™s true, why is Nathaniel still searching for a surgeon for Eleanor?"

She turned, meeting Victoriaโ€™s glare.

"Your brotherโ€™s a renowned doctor. If youโ€™re really marrying Nathaniel, why wonโ€™t he perform the surgery?"
