Chapter 147
Evelyn was still torn. After all, Nathaniel had nearly come to blows with Daniel back at the auction house.
When Nathaniel rushed her to the hospital after she fainted from illness, even Julian had suspected he was the father of her child.
Things would get complicated if Julian found out her friendโs grandmother was Eleanor.
She sighed. This was a mess.
"Evelyn, whatโs wrong?" Julian set down his fork, noticing her troubled expression.
"Is there something you canโt tell me? Does your friend need financial help?"
"No, itโs not that."
Nathaniel certainly didnโt lack money.
After a brief hesitation, Evelyn asked, "Julian, will you help me no matter what?"
"Of course. Youโre my sister."
Heโd always stand by her. If it was something beyond his control, heโd move heaven and earth to find a solution.
Seeing the conflict in her eyes, he ruffled her hair gently.
"Relax. Just tell me which hospital your friendโs grandmother is at. Iโll go with you to check on her."
"Thenโฆ could you ask if the doctor can perform the surgery?"
"Sure. Get some rest now, Evelyn."
She stood and retreated to her room, her mind racing. Should she tell Julian the truth? Would Nathaniel even approve of her interference?
He might accuse her of meddlingโor worse, assume she was just trying to win Eleanorโs favor.
Covering her face with her hands, she forced herself to stop overthinking. For now, sheโd leave it be.
The next morning, Evelyn woke to a dull ache in her abdomen. She couldnโt pinpoint what was wrong, but the discomfort lingered.
Fearing for the baby, she immediately called Julian.
"Julian, my stomach hurts."
Alarm sharpened his voice. "Where are you? Do you need me to come get you?"
"Iโm on my way to you. Maybe Iโm just paranoid."
"Evelyn, if something feels off, you need to go to the hospital. Youโre pregnantโyou canโt take risks."
She agreed. Hailing a cab, she headed straight there.
Julian was already waiting at the entrance.
"The doctorโs ready. Letโs get an ultrasound to rule out any issues."
Her nerves tightened as she underwent the scan, but the results came back clear.
The obstetrician adjusted her glasses. "The babyโs growth might be putting pressure on your uterus, or stress could be a factor. You need to relax."
Evelyn had been agonizing over Eleanorโs surgery.
Exiting with the report, she realized Julian had vanished.
A text blinked on her phone:
Emergency patient. Wait for me when youโre done.
Tucking the report into her bag, she headed to the first-floor lounge. The elevator doors slid openโand there stood Victoria.
Instinctively, Evelyn clutched her bag tighter. The last thing she needed was Victoria snooping into her medical records.
"Evelyn? What are you doing here?" Victoriaโs eyes narrowed in surprise.
Evelyn kept her tone flat. "Do I need permission to visit a hospital?"
She brushed past, but Victoria darted after her.
"Wait! You should knowโmy family approved my engagement to Nathaniel. Thereโs nothing standing in our way now. So give up. Youโve already lost."
Evelyn froze.
"If thatโs true, why is Nathaniel still searching for a surgeon for Eleanor?"
She turned, meeting Victoriaโs glare.
"Your brotherโs a renowned doctor. If youโre really marrying Nathaniel, why wonโt he perform the surgery?"
