Chapter 396
Evelyn Carter's eyes widened as she took in the sleek sports car parked before her. Her breath hitched. Was this man truly that wealthy?
Judith Reeves, still stubborn, sneered. "Evelyn Carter, he's just toying with you. Only my son would offer you marriage."
A soft laugh escaped Evelyn's lips. "Marriage? As if that's some divine gift. I couldn't care less."
Christopher Montgomery leaned casually against the car, his sharp gaze flickering toward Judith. She visibly shrank back. "What do you want?"
His voice was ice. "If you dare harass Evelyn again, I'll ensure your son never sees the outside of a prison cell."
Judith paled. It wasn't until Christopher drove away that the realization struckโhe was likely behind her son's arrest.
But the sports car was already gone.
She collapsed onto the pavement, regret clawing at her chest. If only she hadnโt provoked Evelyn. Now, with her son locked away, what could she do?
Meanwhile, Evelyn walked beside Christopher, her mind racing.
Jonathan Reeves' arrest had stunned her. She quickly texted her former colleagues, piecing together the truth.
One reply read: "Heard Mr. Reeves got busted for financial fraud. Apparently, he fabricated names to embezzle school funds and diverted investor money into his own accountsโbought himself properties."
Another chimed in: "Now that his schemes are exposed, heโs done for. Facing years unless he repays everything. Disgusting. Good thing you left when you did."
Evelyn exhaled sharply. She hadnโt expected Jonathan to be so corrupt. Sheโd never noticed before.
Now, she saw him for what he wasโa fraud.
She hadnโt pressed charges against Judith, but karma had caught up with Jonathan.
Christopher hesitated. "Evelyn... was that woman Jonathanโs mother?"
She nodded. "Yes. He was arrested. It doesnโt look good for him."
"Are you... worried about him?" Christopher asked carefully.
Evelyn arched a brow. "Why would I waste a thought on a man like him? He dug his own grave."
Christopher relaxed slightly.
Then, cautiously, he broached the subject. "Evelyn, I might have misheard, but... did that woman mention a divorce?"
Evelyn paused. "You heard right."
Christopherโs grip tightened on the wheel. "Youโre serious? Who was it?"
How dare anyone divorce Evelyn? Marrying her was a privilege, and that fool had thrown it away!
Evelyn pressed her lips together. "It doesnโt matter who he was. Itโs over."
"Evelyn," Christopher said firmly, pulling the car over. "Youโre not alone anymore. You have us now. Who was he? I swearโ"
She cut him off softly. "I was the one who wanted the divorce."
