Chapter 495
Evelyn quickly interjected, "I don't want anything, Grandma."
"Evelyn, darling. People always secure financial compensation during divorces. How could you refuse? What do you think of our family?"
"Grandma, I married Nathaniel for love, not money. My family is well-off. I don't need anything. Please don't worry about it."
Nathaniel added, "Grandma, I offered her properties, but she declined."
Evelyn nodded in confirmation. "That's true."
Eleanor waved her hand decisively. "I'll handle this matter. I'll arrange a proper settlement. My legal team will prepare the documents immediately."
Evelyn knew Eleanor never went back on her word. The property agreement would be signed, whether she wanted it or not.
Still, Evelyn resisted. "There's no time. Nathaniel and I already planned to go straight to the courthouse. Please don't trouble yourself."
"Nonsense. I'll have the documents delivered there. You can finalize everything together."
Evelyn hadn't expected such stubbornness.
Realizing resistance was futile, she surrendered. "Very well. It's getting late. I should leave now."
"Go ahead. The courthouse remains open. I'll ensure the paperwork is ready promptly," Eleanor insisted, still focused on the divorce.
Evelyn nodded and exited. Outside, she noticed Nathaniel hadn't followed. She hesitated, uncertain whether to proceed alone.
Inside the room, Nathaniel studied his grandmother. "Aren't you angry?"
"Furious! I never realized how you treated her privately. I regret not demanding this divorce sooner."
Her words struck deep. "I thought you adored Evelyn. Why approve the divorce?"
Eleanor gave him a piercing look. "What are you implying?"
"I mean, my marriage matters little. If Evelyn makes you happy, you could make her stay."
"Nathaniel, do you think you're some prize? How could I be so selfish? She's young, reunited with her wealthy family. Even divorced, she'll find true love and build a proper family. Why remain with us?"
Her response stunned him.
The thought of Evelyn with another man ignited unexpected fury.
Eleanor, ever perceptive, noticed his reaction.
Her eyes narrowed. "Nathaniel... could it be you don't want this divorce?"
He averted his gaze. "Nonsense. I'm only considering your happiness."
"Don't shift blame. You'll make me the villain here. If you don't love Evelyn, end this marriage. Stop tormenting each other."
