Chapter 126

Nathaniel's gaze shifted from Julian to Evelyn lying on the hospital bed, a spark of doubt flickering in his piercing blue eyes.

Could the child belong to Julian?

The way Julian kept appearing around the Montgomery women only fueled Nathaniel's growing suspicions.

Avoiding Nathaniel's probing stare, Evelyn whispered weakly, "Please just prescribe fever reducers. Given my... condition, certain medications aren't safe."

Her quiet reminder about her pregnancy was meant for Julian's ears, a silent plea for discretion.

Pushing aside his swirling thoughts, Julian turned to Isabelle. "Prepare the prescription and appropriate medication."

"Shouldn't she receive intravenous fluids?" Nathaniel interjected, his brow furrowing with concern.

Annoyance flashed across Julian's face. "IVs aren't always the best solution."

"But her fever is dangerously high," Nathaniel countered, stepping closer.

Julian met his challenge with icy composure. "Are you the physician here, Mr. Whitmore? If you'd prefer to treat her yourself, by all means."

Evelyn's anxious gaze darted between the two men, silently praying their tension wouldn't escalate.

Nathaniel's expression darkened, but he remained silent, his displeasure evident in the tight line of his jaw.

Moments later, Isabelle returned with the medication.

"Dr. Montgomery," she informed Julian, "they're requesting you at Bed 12."

Julian quickly regained his professional demeanor. "Take your medicine now," he instructed Evelyn. "I'll check on you later."

Evelyn nodded weakly. "Alright."

As Julian exited, Evelyn exhaled in relief. Running into him unexpectedly might have been a stroke of luck she hadn't anticipated. With Julian here, her secret stood a better chance of remaining hidden.

Had she gone to the Whitmore family's private hospital today, everything would have been exposed.

Was this fate's twisted way of helping her?

Reaching for the pills, she realized the water dispenser was across the room. As she struggled to sit up, Nathaniel wordlessly took the cup from her trembling hands.

Watching his retreating figure, Evelyn acknowledged that despite his flaws, Nathaniel still possessed shreds of humanity.

When he returned, she avoided eye contact, accepting the water. "Thank you."

After swallowing the medication, she noticed Nathaniel lingering. Meeting his gaze, she said softly, "Thank you for bringing me here. I'll manage when it's time to leave."

Nathaniel's lips thinned. "Do you imagine I have nothing better to do than wait around?"

With that biting remark, he strode from the emergency room.

Yet instead of leaving immediately, he paused in the corridor, loosening his tie with sharp, frustrated movements.

"Mr. Whitmore, shall we depart?" Robert asked cautiously.

"Why wouldn't we?" Nathaniel snapped. "Do I appear to have unlimited free time?"

He fixed Robert with a pointed look. "Arrange for a private nurse. It would reflect poorly if something happened to her under our watch."

Robert nodded knowingly. Nathaniel always spoke in riddles when concerned.

As Nathaniel approached the hospital entrance, Victoria and Penelope emerged from a taxi.

"Nathaniel, how is Mrs. Carter?" Victoria called out.

"Stable," he replied curtly before continuing past them.

A satisfied smile touched Victoria's lips. It seemed Evelyn's condition wasn't serious.

Just as she turned to leave, a familiar figure in a white coat caught her eye on the second floor. Her breath hitched.

Could that truly be Julian?

What was Julian Montgomery doing in Bern City? He was supposed to be practicing in Nord City.

Without thinking, Victoria dashed inside, ignoring Penelope's confused calls.

"I just need the restroom," Victoria tossed over her shoulder. "Wait here."

Pulling out her phone, she quickly dialed Julian's number as she disappeared into the hospital corridors.
