Chapter 377
Nathaniel's thoughts spiraled out of control as the shocking news sank in.
"Evelyn's pregnant? Then who's the father?" A torrent of questions assaulted his mind.
Before he could process this further, Simon's urgent voice crackled through the phone. "Mr. Whitmore, if complications arise, who should we prioritize? The mother or the child?"
Confronted with this impossible choice, Nathaniel drew a sharp breath.
All he knew in this moment was that the universe was mocking him - he'd been betrayed.
If Evelyn was carrying another man's child, what did that make him?
His voice turned glacial. "Must I really spell it out?"
"The child then?" Simon pressed, assuming heirs mattered most to wealthy men like Nathaniel.
A dark storm crossed Nathaniel's features. "Save the mother. The baby means nothing to me."
He would never waste concern on a child that wasn't his blood.
Suppressing his urge to demand the hospital treat Evelyn was the only mercy he could muster.
If anyone dared suggest he care about that baby, he couldn't be responsible for his actions.
Meanwhile, Robert caught the crucial detail from that conversation - Evelyn was pregnant!
Robert expected Nathaniel to be overjoyed by the news.
Yet judging by Nathaniel's thunderous expression, the baby clearly wasn't his.
Though Robert trusted Evelyn's character, he wisely kept silent.
After hanging up, Nathaniel radiated fury. Robert sealed his lips tight.
Would knowing this secret get him killed?
Being an executive assistant these days required nerves of steel.
Twenty minutes later, the helicopter touched down on the hospital roof.
Nathaniel disembarked to find Simon waiting. As the hospital's largest benefactor, Nathaniel warranted VIP treatment.
Despite his stormy demeanor, concern bled through. "How is she?"
"Congratulations, Mr. Whitmore. Both mother and baby are perfectly healthy."
Nathaniel froze momentarily - he'd secretly hoped this accident would resolve his problem.
Without another word, he stormed toward the private suite.
Evelyn lay peacefully in bed, her expression serene.
No matter how furious he felt, he reined in his temper for now.
He turned sharply to Simon. "What happened? I heard shouting on the phone. Someone pushed her."
Evelyn wouldn't have screamed like that without cause. Something terrible had occurred.
That middle-aged woman's shrill voice - she must be involved.
Simon answered carefully, "Security footage confirms Mrs. Whitmore was pushed. But while we treated her, the woman and her son fled the hospital."
Nathaniel yanked at his tie, baffled why Evelyn would visit that scheming man at the hospital, only to get hurt.
A terrible suspicion took root - was Jonathan the father?
