Chapter 62

"Folic acid is a type of prenatal supplement."

Prenatal supplement? Nathaniel's fingers tightened around the small bottle, his expression shifting into something unreadable.

Evelyn was taking prenatal vitamins? Did that mean she was planning for a baby?

His phone vibrated insistently on the desk, but Nathaniel couldn't tear his gaze away from the innocuous-looking pills.

Robert cleared his throat softly. "Sir, it's your mother calling."

With a distracted motion, Nathaniel brought the phone to his ear. "Yes, Mother?"

"Darling, I've been thinking, and there's something you should know." Beatrice's voice carried that familiar note of urgency. "I was at the hospital visiting an old friend last week. And guess who I saw there?"

Nathaniel rolled the bottle between his fingers absently. "Get to the point."

"Evelyn was meeting with an OB-GYN specialist." Beatrice's tone dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "She's clearly trying to get pregnant. With Eleanor backing her, she's determined to stay in this family. You need to be carefulโ€”if she gets pregnant, divorce will be impossible."

"What makes you think I want a divorce?" Nathaniel's response came sharper than intended, startling even himself.

Beatrice gasped. "You told me she agreed to the divorce! Don't tell me you've developed feelings for that girl."

"Feelings?" Nathaniel massaged his temples. "Mother, stay out of my personal life. I'll handle this myself."

"Open your eyes, Nathaniel! She's scheming to trap you with a baby. Nothing good ever comes fromโ€”"

Nathaniel stopped listening. A slow smirk spread across his face as he studied the bottle again.

"So that's her game," he murmured.

She signed the divorce papers yet secretly took prenatal vitamins.

It all made sense nowโ€”her sudden determination to convince Eleanor about the surgery.

That wasn't just persistenceโ€”it was a calculated move. Nathaniel ended the call, his mood noticeably lighter.

Tucking the bottle into his jacket pocket, he stood abruptly. "Let's go."

Robert hesitated. "Are we... visiting Ms. Evelyn now?" This didn't align with Nathaniel's previous stance on children. Why wasn't he furious about the prenatal vitamins?

Nathaniel's lips curved. "I'm waiting for her to come to me."

Evelyn was playing hard to get. Fine. Nathaniel could play the long game too.

She'd need his cooperation if she wanted that baby. He'd wait and see what move she made next.

Robert remained silent. Something felt off about this situation, but voicing his doubts seemed unwise.

Meanwhile, Evelyn searched her office frantically. The folic acid bottle was missing from her bag.

She'd purchased two supplementsโ€”folic acid and standard vitaminsโ€”and transferred the contents between bottles.

The vitamin bottle sat on her desk. But the folic acid was gone.

Had she left it at the Whitmore mansion?

Retracing her steps proved futile. She could only hope it had fallen somewhere between the pharmacy and her office.

Sighing, Evelyn turned to her computer, pulling up design drafts.

Perhaps she could ask the studio team to source materials and have them delivered to the Whitmore estate before beginning the ceiling renovation.

Nathaniel would undoubtedly appreciate the surprise.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Cassandra's sudden appearance. "I'm jealous, Evelyn. Landing such a wealthy client right away. Is the homeowner handsome?"

Evelyn smiled absently. "Very handsome. And very wealthy." She checked her watch. "Actually, I need to head home early. I won't be able to oversee the entire project. Do you know anyone available to assist?"
