Chapter 448
Danielle blinked in confusion. "How can I help you?"
Victoria Sinclair pulled out her phone and played an audio recording. "Are you the one playing this piece in the music room?"
Danielle nodded slowly. "Yeah, I am." Still puzzled, she tilted her head. "Ms. Sinclair, you said you're looking for your childhood friend?"
Victoria's expression softened. "That's right. Years ago, I visited an orphanage here. A friend from that place helped me when I was lost."
She sighed, her fingers tightening around her phone. "I haven't lived in Bern City for so long. I came back searching for her, but everything has changed. The only clue I have is this pieceโshe's the only one who knows how to play it."
Danielle's thoughts immediately flew to Evelyn. She had taught her this melody, after all. Though they had come from the same orphanage, Evelyn had already left by the time Danielle arrivedโshe was two years younger.
Still, Danielle had always admired Evelyn. A small smile tugged at her lips. "I know where she is."
She was certain Victoria was searching for Evelyn. Fate had finally smiled upon her. Stories like this only happened in books, yet here it was, unfolding right in front of her.
Victoria cut in abruptly, noticing her expression. She lowered her voice, feigning sorrow. "I really need to find her. I want to know how she's doing now. If she's struggling, I'll help herโno matter what."
Danielle's envy flared. But before she could dwell on it, Victoria seized her hand. "It's you, isn't it? You must resent me for not coming back sooner. The distance was too great."
Her voice turned pleading. "My brothers wouldn't let me return to Bern City after what happened at the orphanage. But now, I can finally make it up to you."
She leaned closer, her eyes gleaming. "You're still my best friend. Whatever you needโI'll make it happen. I can publish your book, adapt your storiesโanything."
Danielle's breath hitched. Publish her book? Adapt her stories? Fame and fortuneโjust like that?
A spark of greed flickered in her gaze. As an orphan, she had endured enough pity. She wanted success, recognitionโsomething to prove she wasn't just another charity case.
This was her chance.
But doubt crept in. Evelyn had taught her that piece. Sooner or later, Victoria would uncover the truth.
Danielle hesitated, then tested the waters. "Another girl played this in the hall too. Why are you so sure it's me and not her?"
Victoria's lips curved into a knowing smile. Finally, the question she'd been waiting for. Danielle was hooked.
