Chapter 209
Margaret and Olivia were waiting when Evelyn arrived home. Discovering she'd fainted from malnutrition, Margaret immediately prepared a pot of hearty chicken soup.
Though Evelyn wasn't particularly fond of nourishing broths, she drank it without complaintโfor the baby's sake.
Resting on the sofa, she glanced at Olivia. "Where's Alexander?"
"He's at work. Vista Properties just opened a new branch in Bern City. He went to meet an old friend there."
"I see. That's wonderful. I owe this house to his friend's help. Maybe I should invite him to dinner as thanks."
Olivia coughed lightly. "No need. Alexander already handled it. Consider the debt repaid."
When Evelyn didn't press further, Olivia exhaled in relief.
Where would she even find someone to play that role?
Alexander returned just in time for dinner. His brows knitted the moment he saw Evelyn. "Evelyn, you need to eat better. You're practically skin and bones."
Her lips twitched. That was ridiculousโshe'd actually gained weight recently.
He continued, "Don't worry about the demolition. My friend in construction agreed to meet you personally to finalize the contracts. Your adoptive parents won't be able to interfere."
The "friend" was actually the construction company's CEO, who had agreed to let Alexander pull strings.
Evelyn brightened. "That's amazing! Your friend has been incredibly helpful. I really should treat him to dinner."
Alexander froze. How could he explain that he was the so-called friend?
He shook his head quickly. "Not necessary. I already took him out today."
Evelyn had no choice but to let it go.
That night, she lay in bed, gently stroking her stomach.
Thankfully, her baby was safe.
The next morning, Evelyn arrived at work to find a bouquet of roses on her deskโno note attached.
Curious, she asked, "Was this delivered to the wrong person?"
Her colleagues giggled. "Nope, they're definitely for you. We're jealous."
Evelyn sneezed at the flowers, rubbing her nose. "Do you know who sent them?"
"No idea. Care to guess?"
Their knowing looks gave it away before Jonathan appeared with a box of supplements. "Evelyn, these are excellent for women's health. Since your blood sugar's low, they should help."
She forced a polite smile. "Thank you, Jonathan, but I can't accept them."
The others chimed in, "Come on, Evelyn! Mr. Reeves researched these, and we all gave recommendations!"
He set the box on her desk. "Just take them. I need to get back to work."
As he walked away, Evelyn sighed.
She wasn't blind to his feelings, but a relationship was the last thing on her mind right now.
