Chapter 127
Evelyn searched for Julian, but her repeated calls to his phone went straight to voicemail.
Had she been mistaken about her suspicions?
Yet, the figure in the white coat had looked eerily similar to him.
Inside the emergency roomโs infusion area, Evelyn lay on the bed.
The earlier ordeal had left her drenched in sweat, but now she was slowly regaining her composure.
"Evelyn, it's time you told me the truth. What's really going on?" Julian's stern voice cut through the silence.
As Evelyn took a sip of water, she glanced up to see Julian entering the room. The sudden sight of him startled her, making her choke.
Acting swiftly, Julian gently patted her back. "Careful. Let me get you another glass."
Evelyn coughed, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she looked at him with vulnerability.
Seeing his sisterโs expression, Julianโs initial frustration melted into concern. He sighed deeply, pulling a chair closer to her bedside.
"Evelyn, Iโm not here to scold you. Iโm worried. You dropped the news about your pregnancy so suddenly. How did you expect me to react?"
After everything theyโd done to find herโtheir lost princessโand bring her back into the Montgomery family, they had hoped she would live a life of peace and comfort.
By the time she reached her thirties and considered marriage, her brothers had assumed they would be the ones to vet any potential suitor.
But then came the shocking revelationโshe was already pregnant.
Evelyn lowered her gaze. "I know, but this all happened before you even found me."
"Evelyn, tell me who the father is. I just want to have a... civil conversation with him. As your brother, I deserve to know," Julian pressed.
Beneath his composed exterior, anger simmered.
If not for Evelynโs feelings, he would have already tracked the man down and made him regret ever hurting his sister.
Evelyn pressed her lips together. "Julian, thatโs in the past. I donโt want to talk about it."
"You donโt have to be afraid. You have Andrew, a lawyer with connections to the best legal minds in the city. Weโll make sure he faces consequences."
Evelyn frowned, confused. Had Julian misunderstood?
Meeting his gaze, she clarified, "Lawyers wonโt change anything. I chose to keep the baby after we broke up. He doesnโt even know the child exists."
Julian exhaled in relief, his worst fearsโthat she had been mistreatedโeasing slightly.
But at the mention of a breakup, his expression darkened.
"Who would be foolish enough to leave you?"
Julian held Evelyn in the highest regard. To him, she was perfection. Only an idiot would fail to see her worth.
Evelyn smiled faintly. "I had feelings for him once, but it became too painful. I chose to walk away and leave it all behind."
"Julian, please, I donโt want to revisit those memories or talk about him anymore."
She couldnโt risk Julian confronting Nathaniel. That would only bring disaster.
After all, the Whitmore family was the most powerful in Bern City, with influence that stretched far and wide.
Julianโs brow furrowed. "Is the child Nathanielโs?"
Evelyn froze. How had he guessed? Had he seen Nathaniel escorting her to the hospital earlier?
Quickly, she shook her head. "No, itโs not his."
"Then why was Nathaniel with you today?"
"I fainted at the boutique where I work. He happened to be there on a security check. Recognizing me from when I cared for Eleanor, he helped me."
