Chapter 369

Nathaniel froze.

He couldnโ€™t believe what he was hearing. Evelyn had gone to the hospital to take care of that man?

His fingers tightened around his tie as he adjusted it, his voice sharp. "How generous of her."

Just after heโ€™d dealt with Jonathan, she rushed to his side like some devoted caretaker.

Was she deliberately provoking him?

Or worseโ€”did she actually have feelings for him?

But sheโ€™d sworn she didnโ€™t.

Women. Always lying.

The air in the hotel suite thickened with tension.

Nathaniel looked like heโ€™d been sucker-punched. Robert, standing nearby, didnโ€™t dare breathe too loudly.

He had known Nathaniel would be furious when he reported this.

But if he hadnโ€™t reported it and Nathaniel found out later?

Heโ€™d be fired on the spot.

Sometimes, facing the storm head-on was better than waiting for it to drown you.

Robert glanced at his watch, clearing his throat. "Mr. Whitmore, you have the banquet tonight. Hosted by Clement Sallowโ€”the music industry titan."

He hesitated before adding, "Heโ€™s been calling repeatedly since he found out you were in town. Seems eager to introduce you to his daughter."

Nathaniel didnโ€™t respond.

Instead, he pulled out his phone, thumb hovering over Evelynโ€™s contact.

What was he supposed to say?

He pressed call before he could overthink it.

Evelyn was in the middle of peeling an apple for Jonathan when her phone buzzed.

The caller ID flashed: Jerk.

Her cheeks warmed as she muttered, "I need to take this."

She hurried out of the ward, heart pounding.

Why was Nathaniel calling?

Had he returned from his trip?

She swallowed before answering, voice carefully neutral. "Yes?"

His tone was icy. "Evelyn. I didnโ€™t realize you were so charitable."

Her brows furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

"Playing dumb now?" His laugh was bitter. "My assistant just informed me youโ€™re at the hospital, doting on that snake."

"You swore you didnโ€™t like him. Yet the second heโ€™s hurt, youโ€™re right there, playing nurse?"

His voice dripped with something darkโ€”something he didnโ€™t even recognize as jealousy.

Evelynโ€™s grip on the phone tightened.

Unbelievable.

She scoffed. "Do you have a problem with that? I donโ€™t like him. But leading him on? Thatโ€™s just what a maneater like me does, right?"

Nathanielโ€™s blood pressure spiked.

Just then, the door to his suite opened.

A womanโ€™s voice, smooth and sweet, floated in. "Mr. Whitmore?"

Evelyn heard it.

Her lips curled into a cold smile. "Business trip, huh? And you have the nerve to criticize me?"

She hung up before he could respond.

That voice hadnโ€™t been Victoriaโ€™s.

So heโ€™d moved on to someone new already?

Typical.

Men were all the same.

Nathaniel stared at his phone, fury simmering.

Then he turned to the woman at his door, expression glacial.

"I didnโ€™t order room service."
