Chapter 65
Evelyn called repeatedly, but Nathaniel refused to pick up.
She sent him a text instead. "What exactly donโt you like about the design?"
Minutes passed. Then an hour. Still, no reply.
Evelyn clenched her jaw. He was doing this on purpose.
But if Nathaniel didnโt withdraw the complaint, her studioโs reputation would suffer.
She had to make him change his mind.
When she returned to the office, Cassandra smirked. "Some people think theyโre talented, but reality proves otherwise."
Evelyn ignored her.
Cassandra continued, voice dripping with sarcasm. "Sketching a design is one thing. Executing it properly is another. If this complaint isnโt resolved, our credibility will be ruined by year-end."
Evelyn turned to Jonathan instead. "Iโll fix this," she said firmly.
Jonathan studied her. "I believe you, Evelyn. But is there a communication issue with the client? This draftโฆ it doesnโt look like your usual work."
She hesitated. "Maybe I misunderstood his preferences."
There was no way sheโd admit sheโd sabotaged the design on purpose.
Sheโd been reckless. Sheโd forgotten Nathaniel could always escalate things.
That night, she waited for his response. Nothing.
Frustrated, she returned to the studio and redrew the entire draft from scratch.
Then she texted him again. "Iโll show you the revised design this afternoon. What time do you finish work?"
Nathaniel was in a meeting when his phone lit up.
He glanced at the screen. Evelynโs name flashed.
Heโd ignored her all day. He could keep doing so.
Her studio must be desperate to salvage its reputation. Sooner or later, sheโd come crawling to him.
He read the messageโand chose not to reply.
She knew what she needed to do.
Evelyn waited another hour. Still nothing from that infuriating man.
Fine. If he wouldnโt respond, sheโd go to him.
She hailed a cab to their old marital home. Sheโd redo everything. She might not know every clientโs taste, but she knew his.
The house looked different.
She pressed the doorbell. No answer.
She punched in the codeโand the door swung open.
He hadnโt even changed it.
Stepping inside, she froze.
The place was empty.
Not a single piece of furniture remained. No curtains. No decorations. Just bare walls and floors.
She could almost feel Nathanielโs rage when heโd seen her sabotage.
Sheโd gotten her revenge. Now she had to clean up the mess.
A pang of regret hit her. She shouldnโt have acted so impulsively.
"Evelyn?"
She spun around.
Victoria stood in the kitchen doorway, wearing an apron.
Evelynโs stomach twisted.
That apronโฆ
It was hers.
She hadnโt expected to see Victoria here. But she shouldnโt have been surprised.
Victoria and Nathaniel were living together now. Renovating. Preparing for their future.
She was the intruder.
Evelyn forced a polite smile. "Iโm here for work."
Victoriaโs eyes narrowed. "Work?" Then she noticed the file in Evelynโs hands. "Youโre the new designer?"
She sounded shocked.
Victoria had ordered the butler to strip the house bare, erasing every trace of Evelyn.
But Nathaniel had been furious. Heโd even fired the butler.
Since then, Victoria had hired countless top designersโyet Nathaniel rejected every proposal.
And nowโฆ heโd hired Evelyn?
Victoriaโs grip tightened on her apron.
This wasnโt over.
