Chapter 395

Evelyn froze when she heard that Jonathan had been arrested. "What are you talking about?"

"Evelyn, you're the only one who can help me now. Ever since my son was taken into custody, the entire studio staff has abandoned their posts. Some even demanded their unpaid salaries from me. Where am I supposed to get that kind of money? My son trusted you more than anyone. He always said you were the most gifted designer in the company. If you come back and support his business, there might still be a chance to save it," Judith pleaded, desperation thick in her voice.

Now Evelyn understood why Judith had sought her out with such humility. She had been waiting here, hoping to manipulate her into returning.

Evelyn remained unmoved. "I'm sorry, but I've already resigned. I won't be going back."

"Evelyn, I know you and my son were once close. It was my fault for interfering. I regret it now. But with him in trouble, you're the only person I can turn to. If you help him through this crisis and get him out, I won't stand in your way anymore. You can be together," Judith begged again, her voice trembling.

Evelyn frowned in disbelief. "Do you and your son share the same delusion? I never had feelings for Jonathan. He was the one who wouldn't leave me alone. I will never be with him. Is that clear enough?"

She turned to leave, unwilling to waste another second on this conversation.

Judith's face twisted in anger. "Oh, so now that my son is down on his luck, you're abandoning him? Don't forgetโ€”you're a divorced woman! Who do you think you are to look down on him?"

Evelyn's expression remained icy. "I'd rather stay single for the rest of my life than be with Jonathan."

"Evelyn Carter, stop pretending! You rushed to the hospital to take care of him when he was injured last time. This is just a temporary setback. My son has powerful connectionsโ€”he'll bounce back soon enough. And when he does, you'll regret turning your back on him!" Judith snapped, her face red with fury.

Evelyn arched a brow. "Is that so? I'll be waiting for that day, then."

"Evelyn Carter, no wonder your marriage failed! You're nothing but a gold-digger! What man would ever want someone like you? Let me tell youโ€”no decent man will look twice at a divorced woman like you. Do you really think you're some prize? You'll never find another man as devoted as my son!" Judith shrieked, her voice rising hysterically.

Before Evelyn could respond, a firm hand settled on her shoulder, and a smooth voice cut in. "I'm afraid you're mistaken. I happen to be her suitor. And even if she were twice her age, she'd still have admirers lining up for her."

Evelyn recognized Christopher's voice and stayed silent, letting him handle Judith. The woman's venomous words were making her stomach churn.

Judith's eyes bulged when she took in Christopher's striking features. "Where did this pretty boy come from?"

Christopher smirked. "Nord City. And for the record, my net worth would make your mama's boy look like a pauper."

"Liar! You're probably just some gigolo. How could a woman like Evelyn land a wealthy man? She's an orphan! Her family has nothing!" Judith spat.

Christopher's expression darkened. He lifted his wrist, flashing an expensive watch, then glanced at Evelyn. "Let's go. I just bought a new sports car. Want to take it for a spin?"

Evelyn played along, tilting her head. "Is it a gift for me?"

"Of course. If you asked for the stars, I'd pluck them from the sky for you," Christopher said with a playful wink.

Evelyn followed him outside the school gates. Sure enough, a sleek, high-end sports car gleamed under the sunlight, parked right by the curb.
