Chapter 421
Evelyn found Nathaniel's behavior utterly baffling. The divorce agreement clearly stipulated that he would surrender all his shares to her.
According to Benjamin's conditions, Nathaniel would essentially walk away from their marriage with nothing.
How could he remain so composed? It made no sense to her.
Nathaniel leaned back in his chair, his piercing gaze fixed on Evelyn. "I'm in no hurry. Why are you so tense?"
Evelyn blinked. Had she heard him correctly?
A disbelieving laugh escaped her lips.
"Nathaniel, if you're not concerned, then I'll simply take this agreement to Whitmore Enterprises tomorrow and assume your position as CEO."
To her surprise, Nathaniel didn't react with anger. Instead, an amused smirk curled at the corners of his mouth.
"Sounds perfect. The workload has been exhausting lately. I could use a break."
His tone was infuriatingly casual.
"If you ever need help with company matters, donโt hesitate to ask."
Evelynโs confusion deepened.
In a burst of frustration, she grabbed his tie, pulling him closer. "Nathaniel, are you toying with me?"
Nathaniel sprawled lazily in his seat, one leg stretched out casually.
His eyes gleamed with mischief as he studied her. She was practically in his lap now, her almond-shaped eyes glistening with unshed tears, a mix of anger and defiance swirling in them.
She was like a wildcatโbeautiful yet unpredictable, her claws always ready to strike.
Nathanielโs throat bobbed as his voice dropped lower. "Hmm, youโve gotten sharper this time."
He was definitely provoking her on purpose.
Evelynโs temper flared. What game was he playing?
But when she met his gaze, the intensity in his dark eyes sent a jolt through her. It reminded her of that reckless night months ago.
Heat rushed to her cheeks.
Suddenly, she became acutely aware of her positionโhalf-sprawled across his lap, as if sheโd thrown herself at him when she grabbed his tie.
Embarrassed, she tried to pull away, but Nathanielโs hands tightened around her waist.
The warmth of his palms seeped through the thin fabric of her dress, making her skin prickle with awareness.
She squirmed, her face burning, but Nathaniel held firm.
As they struggled, the air between them grew thick with tension.
Evelyn huffed. "Nathaniel, let go! This is a public office!"
His grip only tightened, his gaze darkening. "Weโre still married, arenโt we? Thereโs nothing inappropriate about this."
"Iโm pregnant!" she snapped.
Was he out of his mind?
Nathanielโs expression darkened further. Instead of releasing her, he cupped the back of her head, his lips curling into a cold smile.
"I donโt need reminding. Iโm well aware the child isnโt mine." His voice was icy. "But that just means we donโt have to worry about protection, doesnโt it?"
Evelynโs lips parted in shock. What was he implying?
Before she could react, Nathaniel pulled her fully onto his lap, her legs straddling his.
Her ear pressed against his chest, the steady rhythm of his heartbeat loud in her ears. The heat radiating from him made her pulse race.
Her entire body trembled as she struggled, but Nathanielโs hold was unyielding.
His gaze dropped to her lips, lingering there.
Then, without warning, he closed the distance between them.
