Chapter 431
Evelyn's cheeks burned with humiliation at Nathaniel's words.
What on earth was he talking about?
But Dr. Diana remained perfectly composed, unfazed by the awkwardness. "We have educational materials on this subject available at the hospital. If you're interested, you can purchase one to take home."
Nathaniel stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Is that so? How considerate."
Evelyn quickly cut in, turning to Diana. "Are my babies really okay?"
Even though Diana had already assured her about the twins' health, Evelyn needed to hear it again for her own peace of mind.
She couldnโt shake the suspicion that Nathaniel and Diana might be conspiring to deceive her.
Diana gave her a knowing look. "If your children werenโt alive, you wouldnโt have the energy to argue so passionately right now. An abortion isnโt exactly a walk in the park."
Evelyn found some comfort in her words. She felt no pain in her abdomen, no telltale scent of blood.
If she had really lost them, it would have destroyed her.
She exhaled in relief, grateful to wake up and find Nathaniel beside her.
Yet, the memory of him forcing her toward an abortion and locking her in the hospital still lingered like a shadow.
After finishing her examination, Diana turned to Evelyn. "As you enter the later stages of pregnancy, you must take better care of yourself."
"Youโre showing signs of malnourishment, especially since youโre carrying twins. Given your husbandโs wealth, is there really a need for you to overexert yourself daily?"
Nathaniel received another pointed glance from Diana, prompting him to interject. "This isnโt my fault. Itโs not like she has to work so hard at home."
Evelyn smirked and shot him a look. "Oh? Who was the one cooking? Who handled all the chores? Who picked out your outfits every morning?"
The moment she finished, both Diana and Isabelle turned their disapproving stares toward Nathaniel.
Dianaโs tone softened as she addressed Evelyn. "As an expectant mother, your health comes first. If you neglect yourself, how will you care for the babies growing inside you?"
Evelyn nodded earnestly. "I understand now."
Once Diana and Isabelle left, Nathaniel spoke cautiously. "Are you happy now that youโve publicly shamed me?"
Evelyn scoffed. "I wasnโt shaming you. Was anything I said untrue?"
"But that was in the past. Itโs not like you collapsed this time because of housework, right?"
Guilt flickered in Evelynโs chest, and she quickly deflected. "Didnโt I just say it was in the past?"
Nathanielโs jaw tightened. "Evelyn, is this how you thank someone who saved your life? If I hadnโt caught you in time and rushed you here, do you honestly think youโd be sitting here lecturing me?"
He was so furious he reached for his tie to loosen it, only to find it already undone from the hours spent waiting for her to wake.
Evelyn shuddered at the thought of what might have happened if he hadnโt been there when she collapsed.
Even though the babies were his, she had no intention of telling himโnot yet.
Taking a deep breath, she cleared her throat. "Thank you for helping me earlier."
Nathaniel arched a brow. "Well, well. A 'thank you' from you? Thatโs rare."
Ignoring his sarcasm, Evelyn grabbed her bag from the bedside table, ready to leave.
If she didnโt return home soon, Margaret and her brothers would start asking questions.
Nathaniel frowned. "Where do you think youโre going?"
Clutching her bag tighter, she answered, "Home, obviously."
He smirked. "In such a hurry? Afraid Iโll take advantage of you?"
Remembering his earlier call with Christopher, Nathanielโs mood darkened. Soon, sheโd be facing the Montgomerysโand he wasnโt sure she was ready for that.
