Chapter 266

Evelyn gently placed a hand on her stomach and turned to Julian with concern in her eyes. "Julian, how's Jonathan doing? He got hurt protecting me."

"Jonathan has a concussion and some head trauma, but it's not life-threatening. He's resting at the hospital now."

"Given what he went through trying to save you, I'd say he's earned some hero points."

"Julian, it's not like that between Jonathan and me. Besides, I'm pregnantโ€”what man would want me like this?"

Julian's expression darkened at her words.

"Evelyn, don't ever think a child makes you less worthy. You have your brothers. We'll stand by you no matter what."

He even scoffed at Jonathan's abilities, calling them mediocre at best.

Evelyn didn't argue further. Instead, she bought some fruit and headed to Jonathan's hospital room.

To her surprise, an elegant older woman was already thereโ€”Judith Reeves, Jonathan's mother.

Guilt twisted in Evelyn's chest. "Jonathan, how are you feeling?"

"Evelyn! You're okay?" Jonathan's face lit up despite the bandages wrapped around his head. "I was so worried something had happened to you."

Judith quickly steadied him with a disapproving frown. "Jonathan, be careful. The doctor said you shouldn't move too much. That concussion needs time to heal."

She turned to Evelyn with thinly veiled irritation. "You may be unharmed, but my son is seriously injured."

"Mom, I already explained everything," Jonathan said firmly. "Evelyn, don't mind her. I'm just relieved you're safe."

Evelyn met Judith's gaze and bowed slightly. "Mrs. Reeves, I'm truly sorry. This is entirely my fault."

"At least you admit it," Judith sniffed. "Jonathan has never been hurt like this before. What if there are complications? He could end up alone because of this."

Evelyn took a deep breath. "If there are any lasting effects, I'll take full responsibility."

Judith's expression softened slightly. "That's more like it, Ms. Carter. You seem like a sensible girl who understands gratitude."

She reached for Evelyn's hand, her grip firm. "Jonathan speaks highly of you. Says you're talented, that you've won awards at his studio."

Evelyn forced a polite smile. "He's too kind. Honestly, I've caused him nothing but trouble."

Judith's eyes gleamed with calculation. "Jonathan has always been popular with women. Even in school, he received love letters every week."

"Mom," Jonathan groaned, embarrassed.

Judith waved him off. "Ms. Carter, forgive my bluntnessโ€”but are you seeing anyone?"

Evelyn froze. Was this woman actually trying to set them up?
