Chapter 211

Nathaniel and Victoria were announcing their engagement this weekend?

Evelyn had known for weeks, yet hearing it from Penelope still made her chest constrict.

Sophia scoffed. "Let's send our warmest regards to that cheating bastard and his gold-digging whore. Besides, Evelyn's getting demolition money soon. She could upgrade to a real man anytime."

Penelope doubled over with laughter. "Demolition money? Like that could ever elevate her status!"

Evelyn gripped Sophia's arm, steering her away before fists started flying.

Penelope Whitmore wasn't someone to provoke - not with the Whitmore family's influence.

As Evelyn retreated, Penelope dialed Cassandra. "Dig up everything about Evelyn Carter's demolition. I want details."

"Consider it done." Cassandra hung up, bitterness twisting her features.

Why did undeserving nobodies like Evelyn always catch lucky breaks?

Life was truly unjust.

On another floor, Sophia shook with indignation. "Why stop me? That spoiled heiress needs to be put in her place! You're about to be loaded, and she's just-"

"It's not envy," Evelyn corrected quietly. "It's contempt."

Sophia's eyes widened. "Wait... is your ex actually that wealthy?"

The silence stretched until Evelyn gestured to a corporate billboard. "He runs that empire."

"No. Freaking. Way." Sophia clapped a hand over her mouth. "You married the Whitmore Group's CEO? And never told me?"

"NDA." Evelyn's smile didn't reach her eyes. "Plus, who brags about being someone's hidden shame? Thank God I kept quiet before they discarded me."

Sophia processed this bombshell before exhaling sharply. "Silver lining - you're free of that vipers' nest now."

"Jonathan's decent. Handsome, driven." Sophia squeezed her hand. "Stick with people from your own world."

Evelyn's laugh was brittle. "Exactly. Birds of a feather." She rubbed her temples. "Sorry for the mood kill."

"Pfft." Sophia bumped shoulders with her. "You're building your own empire now. Soon you'll be the one they're scrambling to impress. Our Cinderella story's just getting started!"

They parted ways, Evelyn returning to her suddenly peaceful apartment.

With Alexander Montgomery handling the demolition, Margaret and Walter hadn't dared harass her lately.

For the first time in months, she could breathe.

After lectures, Evelyn headed straight to work.

"Free this weekend?" a colleague asked.

Evelyn blinked. "Tomorrow's Saturday already?"

"Family emergency. Could you cover my shift?"

"Sure." Weekends at the studio were quiet anyway - just her and a skeleton crew.

Jonathan brought afternoon coffees. "Big client acquisition. Celebrate with me?"

"Does this mean weekend overtime?" someone groaned.

"Smart cookie." Jonathan grinned. "Power through this crunch, then rotate days off."

He slid a cup toward Evelyn. "Hope this doesn't wreck your plans."

"Plans?" She arched a brow. "I live to work overtime." Then pushed the coffee away. "You know I hate caffeine."
