Chapter 399
Evelyn froze at the familiar voice. She turned slowly to see Andrew standing there.
Her heart leaped with unexpected joy as she rushed toward him. "I thought you'd gone back to Nord City."
Just last week, Andrew had come all the way to North City to defend her honor against Jonathan's schemes.
Though she'd struck a deal with Jonathan to drop the matter, she assumed Andrew had returned to his busy practice.
Andrew reached out, ruffling her hair affectionately. "I had a case here. What perfect timing. Since Jonathan insists on being difficult, you shouldn't hold back anymore."
Memories of Nathaniel's revelations about Jonathan's manipulation and threats flashed through Evelyn's mind. Enough was enough.
She nodded decisively. "You're right. The hospital security footage and my medical records are still available. Filing charges should be straightforward."
Suddenly, she felt an intense gaze burning into her back.
Evelyn turned to meet Nathaniel's piercing stare. Lowering her eyes, she followed Andrew to file the official report.
From across the room, Nathaniel's attention fixed on the well-dressed man beside Evelyn. A lawyer?
His jaw tightened as he approached Robert. "Find out everything about that man."
Robert studied the stranger briefly before responding, "That appears to be Andrew Montgomery, Nord City's top litigator."
"The Montgomery family?" Nathaniel's brow furrowed at the mention of the powerful clan. Another Montgomery connection.
Of course.
Given Evelyn's relationship with Julian, it made sense the Montgomerys would get involved. Yet something felt... off.
Evelyn seemed unusually comfortable with the Montgomerys.
After completing her statement, Evelyn prepared to leave with Andrew, deliberately avoiding Nathaniel's gaze as they passed each other in the hallway.
Outside the police station, Evelyn exhaled deeply. Andrew hesitated before asking, "Evelyn, are you still... involved with Nathaniel?"
"No, it was just coincidence. You know I'm close to his grandmother. That's why he wanted to help."
"Is that really all there is?" Andrew pressed.
Evelyn's pulse quickened. "Why the sudden interest, Andrew?"
"According to my sources, you originally came here with Jonathan to accuse Nathaniel of assault. Yet today you recanted. Evelyn, what's really between you two?"
Evelyn's breath caught. She hadn't realized Andrew knew so much. There was no point denying it now.
She bit her lip. "I thought Jonathan was the victim, but I learned the truth. He deserved what happened, so I changed my testimony."
Andrew recognized her evasion but didn't push further. Still, he couldn't shake the sense of deeper history between Evelyn and Nathaniel.
As they returned to campus for her afternoon classes, an uneasy premonition settled over Evelyn. Something was coming. Something bad.
