Chapter 349

Evelyn was stunned by Nathaniel's response. What on earth was that man plotting?

Was he planning to expose their relationship one day before their divorce? The divorce was happening tomorrow!

Her nerves were stretched thin.

Theodore scolded sharply. "What cousin? Shut your mouth, Jonathan!"

He couldn't believe his ears when Jonathan blurted that out. Evelyn was Nathaniel's wife!

How dare Jonathan make advances toward the wife of the wealthiest man in the city? She was far beyond his reach.

Evelyn's cheeks burned at the mention of that word.

Back when Cassandra spread vicious rumors about her, Nathaniel had personally intervened by presenting their marriage certificate in Theodore's office.

So, Theodore knew they were married.

Nathaniel's icy glare pierced through Jonathan. "How dare someone like you confess to her? I won't allow it!"

Jonathan's face turned ashen. "Please, Mr. Whitmore, let me explain!"

Now that Nathaniel was pretending to be her cousin, Evelyn wished the ground would swallow her whole.

Nathaniel ignored Jonathan and stepped closer to her. "What are you standing there for, cousin? Let's go."

Under the weight of everyone's stares, she forced herself to follow him out of the room.

Jonathan tried to pursue them but was blocked by security.

Theodore frowned. "Jonathan, you were always a smart man. Why are you acting like this now? Evelyn is out of your league."

Too proud to admit defeat, Jonathan snapped, "Why not? She's a woman, and I'm a man. I have every right to pursue her. You have no say in this."

If he could win Evelyn over and get her brothers to invest in his studio, he wouldnโ€™t need to grovel before anyone at the university anymore.

The fact that she was a soon-to-be-divorced woman only boosted his confidence. Women like her were easy prey.

Besides, he had never been married, making him the more valuable one. Surely, Evelyn was smart enough to realize rejecting him would be a mistake.

With a cold expression, Jonathan turned and stormed off. He had no intention of wasting another second on Theodore.

Snorting at Jonathan's arrogance, Theodore turned to his secretary. "Withdraw all our investments in him."

"There's no point keeping someone like him around. He's nothing but trouble. The sooner we cut ties, the better."

Angering Nathaniel and losing the Whitmore family's investments would be a massive blow to the university.

Theodore had considered advising Jonathan, who seemed oblivious to Evelyn's connection with Nathaniel. But Jonathan's attitude changed his mind.

Foolish men like him were bound to meet their downfall sooner or later.

Evelyn and Nathaniel walked out of the campus together.

Settling into the back seat of the car, she glanced at him. "What were you doing here?"

"Why? Did I ruin your romantic moment?" Nathaniel's sharp tongue struck again.

She leaned back in her seat. "It wasn't romantic. Thank goodness you showed up. Otherwise, I wouldnโ€™t have known how to escape that mess."

"Oh? Kneeling on one knee to confess isn't romantic enough for you?" he taunted, his tone laced with bitterness.

The moment the words left his mouth, he realized how acidic he sounded and shut his eyes, refusing to speak further.

She replied calmly, "That depends. I donโ€™t feel anything for Jonathan. Itโ€™s like how I married you with one-sided feelings, and you ignored me for three years after waking up."

"Thereโ€™s nothing romantic about being pursued by someone you donโ€™t love." The weight of her words hung heavy in the air.

The driver and Robert held their breaths.

Perhaps Evelyn was the only person in the world brave enough to talk back to Nathaniel Whitmore.
