Chapter 215
Evelyn found it peculiar. Who could she possibly have angered?
The list of people who might hold a grudge against her was shortโonly Penelope and Victoria came to mind.
Suddenly, everything clicked into place.
"I'm not entirely sure yet," Evelyn murmured.
At that moment, a sleek black car pulled up abruptly by the curb. Alexander's expression darkened as he stepped out.
"Evelyn, are you all right? Where are Walter and Beverly? I need to have a word with them."
Evelyn shook her head. "They already left."
Walter and Beverly, who had been harassing her relentlessly, had fled the moment they spotted Alexander.
They knew better than to stick around when he was involvedโthey feared his wrath.
Jonathan turned to Evelyn. "Let's get Aunt Margaret home first."
Alexander's sharp gaze landed on Jonathan, his tone icy. "And you are?"
Evelyn quickly intervened. "Alexander, this is Jonathan Reeves, my boss and my senior from university."
Jonathan offered a polite smile. "Pleasure to meet you, Mr. Montgomery."
Alexander gave a curt nod. So, this was the studio owner Julian had mentionedโthe one who'd rushed Evelyn to the hospital.
At least he seemed decent. The fact that he'd helped Evelyn made him marginally tolerable in Alexander's eyes.
His expression softened as he turned back to Evelyn and Margaret. "Get in the car. I'll take you both home."
After helping Margaret into the vehicle, Evelyn turned and waved at Jonathan.
"Thank you for today, Jonathan."
"Anytime," he replied.
Jonathan watched as they drove off in the sleek Volkswagen. His eyes narrowed when he recognized the modelโit wasn't just any ordinary car.
A Volkswagen Phaeton. Worth at least a few hundred thousand dollars.
Definitely not something an average person could afford.
A realization struck himโEvelyn hadn't been entirely honest about her circumstances. No wonder she owned that million-dollar house in the upscale neighborhood.
A loan couldn't have covered that.
A surge of determination coursed through him. He had to make her his. If he succeeded, he wouldn't have to struggle anymore.
Inside the car, Margaret fretted anxiously. "Evelyn, what if Walter and Beverly really did receive the demolition payment?"
"Don't worry, Aunt Margaret," Alexander reassured her, gripping the steering wheel. "They won't get a single cent. I've been in real estate long enough to know how these things work. Trust me."
Evelyn nodded in agreement. "Alexander's right. We need to trust him to handle this."
When they arrived home, Olivia tended to Margaret while Evelyn and Alexander settled in the living room.
After a moment of silence, Evelyn spoke up. "Alexander, according to Jonathan's inquiries at the Demolition Department, it seems I've angered someone influential."
"Don't worry," Alexander replied, his jaw tight. "I've already sent someone to investigate."
He was seething. Despite having personally reminded Geoffrey Wilson over dinner, things had still gone wrong.
His phone buzzedโCharles was calling. Alexander stepped onto the balcony, closing the door behind him. When he turned back, his expression was stormy.
"Who is it?"
He would make sure the person behind this paid dearly.
After a brief hesitation, Charles replied, "It appears the Whitmore family is involved."
"What?"
At the mention of the Whitmores, Alexander spun around, glancing through the glass door at Evelyn in the living room. He shut the balcony door firmly before lowering his voice.
"Did you find out why?"
How dare Nathaniel target Evelyn? What was he playing at?
Was he using the demolition as leverage to force her into becoming his mistress?
