Chapter 494

Evelyn was trembling with such fury she could barely steady herself.

Following Eleanor's suggestion, she attempted to walk, but her legs gave out after only a few steps.

Nathaniel caught her instantly. "Careful, Grandmother."

"Don't pretend to care now," she snapped, shoving his hand away. "I never thought my own grandson could be so heartless."

Evelyn hadn't anticipated Eleanor's rage would be this intense. Swallowing her words, she silently guided Eleanor back into the room.

Once Eleanor was seated, Evelyn poured her a glass of warm water. "Here, Grandmother."

"This is all my fault, Evelyn. I never should have pressured you to stay. Three years is too long. If there's no love between you, then there's no point forcing this marriage. It's only wasting your youth." Eleanor sighed. "You've found your real family now. Divorce him and go start fresh."

Evelyn hesitated, unsure how to respond. Eleanor was being far kinder than she deserved.

She was actually encouraging the divorce.

Nathaniel stiffened, his gaze unconsciously trailing Evelyn's figure, lips pressed tight.

With Eleanor's blessing, what reason did Evelyn have left to stay?

His chest tightened.

He had assumed Eleanor would be the last person to agree to this.

Eleanor took the glass, her sharp eyes fixed on him. "Nathaniel, it's a weekday. Go to the courthouse and file the papers. I hear there's a mandatory cooling-off period now. The sooner you start, the sooner Evelyn can move on."

Evelyn bit her lip. "Actually, Grandmother, we already scheduled the divorce once. But then your surgery happened, and... we postponed it."

The moment the words left her mouth, she felt Nathaniel's piercing stare burn into her back.

She didn't turn around. With Eleanor's support, she had nothing left to fear.

Eleanor grasped her hand. "Oh, child. You delayed it for my sake, didn't you?"

Evelyn lowered her eyes. "Your health mattered more, Grandmother."

"I always knew you were too good for him." Eleanor sighed. "No more pretending. It's time to end this."

Guilt twisted in Evelyn's chest. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be. Those three years were stolen from you. Go home to your real family."

Nathaniel's expression darkened. Even now, he still didn't know who Evelyn's birth parents were.

Evelyn smiled softly. "I'll visit often. We can video call too."

"Of course." Eleanor patted her hand before turning to Nathaniel. "Now, about the assetsโ€”how will you divide them?"
