Chapter 220
Evelyn pressed her lips together, her tone sharp. "If you're so confident, go ahead and dig deeper. Once you find something, come back and we'll talk terms."
Just then, Julian's voice carried through the door. "Evelyn?"
"Coming," she replied, swiftly ending the call.
On the other end, Nathaniel frowned. That voiceโit sounded familiar. Too familiar.
Julian Montgomery. Victoria's brother.
Why was Julian with Evelyn this early in the morning? Had they spent the night together?
The thought twisted in Nathaniel's chest, an unsettling weight settling over him.
His expression darkened as he turned to Robert. "What's the status on the investigation into Evelyn's old neighborhood redevelopment?"
Robert blinked, confused. "Redevelopment? Oh, you mean the Eastside project?"
"Our company already settled with the residents. There shouldn't be any issues."
Nathaniel pinched the bridge of his nose, irritation flaring. "I meant Evelyn's old neighborhood. What are you even talking about?"
Robert swallowed nervously. "Mr. Coleman from Optima Construction mentioned someone from our company approached them."
"After looking into it, it seems to be someone from Ms. Penelope's team. So, this is likely tied to her."
Given Penelope's history of targeting Evelyn, the connection wasn't surprising.
Nathaniel's jaw tightened. "Anything else?"
"Well, today's the scheduled signing day for the old neighborhood."
"The house owned by Ms. Evelyn and Ms. Margaret was claimed by her adoptive parents. They managed to sign ahead of everyone else," Robert explained.
Nathaniel stood abruptly, his voice clipped. "I'm heading there now."
Robert hesitated. "But the PR team is waiting for you regarding Ms. Penelope's situationโ"
"If the PR department can't handle it without me, then whatโs the point of them?" Nathaniel snapped.
With that, he grabbed his jacket and strode out.
Robert sighed. Was Nathaniel really rushing off to confront Evelyn again?
After ending the call, Evelyn stepped out of her room to find all six of her brothers gathered in the living room.
She raised an eyebrow. "Why are you all here?"
Alexander flashed her a grin. "We promised to back you up, didnโt we?"
For a moment, warmth flickered in her chest. It was comforting, having them stand with her.
After breakfast, they set off for the old neighborhood.
By the time they arrived, a crowd had already gathered outside.
Evelyn, flanked by her brothers and Margaret, walked into the courtyard, spotting familiar faces among the neighbors.
With six imposing men at her side, her presence was undeniable.
An elderly neighbor called out, "Evelyn, your adoptive parents are here tooโover there."
Following the gesture, Evelyn spotted Walter and Beverly huddled in a corner, Cassandra lingering beside them.
At the sight of Evelyn and her brothers, Walter and Beverly paled.
Fear flickered in their eyes. They remembered how easily Evelyn had handled them last time. Now, with six men backing her, the threat felt ten times worse.
Cassandra, however, smirked and sauntered forward. "Evelyn, did you really need to bring an entire entourage? Are these all your exes?"
Her voice dripped with mock admiration. "I have to say, I'm impressed. Managing six men at onceโyou must have quite the talent."
Evelyn didnโt flinch. "Youโve got nerve showing up here. Havenโt you checked the news?"
Given the scandal surrounding Penelope, anyone with internet access knew the details.
Yet here Cassandra stood, bold as ever.
Evelynโs gaze sharpened. "Or are you just that desperate?"
