Chapter 415
Nathaniel's dark eyes widened in shock as the words sank in.
His response came instantly, sharp and defensive. "Absolutely not!"
The mere suggestion that he might harbor feelings for Evelyn was absurd.
Gregory's voice turned stern. "If you truly don't care for Evelyn, why are you so vulnerable around her? Your subconscious trusts her more than you realize."
He leaned forward, pressing further. "And let's not forgetโthis divorce has dragged on for months. She's moved on with other men, yet you've tolerated it. Is that fair to you?"
Nathaniel's lips pressed into a thin line, his expression cooling. "I'm doing this for Grandmother Eleanor."
Gregory scoffed. "Before her surgery, everyone assumed Evelyn would use the situation to cling to you."
His tone sharpened. "But the surgery is over. Why hasn't the divorce been finalized?"
A pause. Then, pointedly: "And when Evelyn's lawyer presented the property settlement, you signed without even reviewing the terms."
His gaze bore into Nathaniel. "Tell me that wasn't spite."
Nathaniel frowned. "Spite?"
Gregory crossed his arms. "You signed because you were angryโangry that Evelyn initiated the divorce, angry she drafted the agreement without consulting you."
His voice dropped. "That sounds like unresolved feelings to me."
Nathaniel fell silent. Gregory's words struck a nerve. Ever since signing those papers, he'd noticed something unsettlingโhis attention kept drifting back to Evelyn.
But it made no sense.
"Nat, drowning yourself in alcohol won't solve anything," Gregory said firmly.
Nathaniel lifted his gaze. "You think I should find her?"
"Yes. Immediately."
Nathaniel's fingers tightened around the wine bottle, unease coiling in his chest. "I... need to sort out my feelings first."
Gregory blinked, taken aback.
He stared at Nathaniel in disbelief. "I suggested you see Evelyn to discuss the settlementโnot your emotions. That's something I can't help you with."
Gregory couldn't fathom it. Nathaniel was on the brink of financial ruin, yet his mind was fixated on Evelyn.
Nathaniel looked away, his expression shifting uncomfortably. "This can wait."
"Wait?" Gregory's voice rose. "You're about to lose everything! If your ancestors knew you were handing over company shares in a divorce, they'dโ"
Nathaniel swirled the wine calmly. "Evelyn isn't that kind of person. She wouldn't take what's mine."
Gregory's patience frayed. "Then why did her lawyer push for the settlement?"
Nathaniel's jaw clenched at the mention of the lawyer. "The terms were problematic. Evelyn likely didn't know."
If Evelyn had truly wanted his assets, she would have demanded them long ago.
Before this, Nathaniel had even prepared his own settlementโonly for Evelyn to refuse everything and tear it up.
There was no way these unreasonable terms had come from her.
Gregory's lips twitched. "You trust her that much?"
"It's not just her. It's Grandmother Eleanor's judgment too," Nathaniel insisted.
Gregory nearly rolled his eyes. Using Eleanor as an excuse again?
Only a fool would believe that.
With a sigh, he asked the obvious. "Then who is this lawyer?"
