Chapter 155
Evelyn maintained her composure despite Victoriaโs biting remarks.
โCanโt I be here to check on Grandma Eleanor? Her surgery hasnโt been finalized yet.โ
She didnโt mention that Julian was already searching for a specialist.
Still, she wanted to know if Nathaniel was aware of why Victoriaโs brother couldnโt perform the operation.
Victoriaโs smirk deepened. โIs that so? Well, you donโt need to worry anymore. My brother has agreed to operate on Grandma Eleanor.โ
โThe surgery will happen by the end of this month, and sheโll recover in no time.โ
Evelyn froze for a second, then instinctively turned to Nathaniel. โIs that true?โ
There wouldnโt be any last-minute complications, would there?
Nathaniel gave a curt nod. โSheโs right. The surgery is scheduled for the end of the month.โ
Evelyn lowered her gaze, murmuring, โThatโs good. I hope everything goes smoothly for Grandma Eleanor.โ
In a way, this was for the best.
Meanwhile, Victoria was practically glowing. She had thought sheโd lost her chance entirely, but fate had handed her an opportunity instead.
This was perfect. With this, Evelyn would no longer be a threat to her.
She smirked, tilting her head at Nathaniel. โCome on, Nate. We should go tell Grandma Eleanor the good news.โ
Evelyn couldnโt stay a second longer. She turned on her heel and strode toward the stairs.
Victoria watched her leave with a triumphant smile.
โNate, letโs go.โ
Nathanielโs expression remained impassive as he said coolly, โDonโt tell Grandma yet. If she finds out, she might refuse the surgery.โ
Victoriaโs face darkened. โIt canโt be that bad, can it? My brother is one of the best surgeons in the country.โ
She had been terrified when Nathaniel was involved in that car accident.
But now, she was the one saving Eleanorโs lifeโbegging Alexander and Sebastian to convince her brother to operate.
So why wasnโt Eleanor grateful?
Eleanor doted on Evelyn because she had saved Nathanielโs life. Shouldnโt she treat Victoria better now that Victoria was saving hers?
A warning glint flashed in Nathanielโs eyes. โVictoria, donโt push your luck.โ
Instantly, Victoria shrank back, guilt flickering across her face. โNate, relax. I wonโt do anything reckless.โ
โBut I only managed to get Alexander and Sebastian to agree because I told them you were going to marry me. You heard what Sebastian said earlier.โ
โI agreed to a fake engagement. Thatโs all this isโa transaction.โ
โI know.โ Victoria lowered her voice. โBut even if itโs fake, we still need a ceremony to convince my brothers. Otherwise, theyโll start asking questions.โ
โWe have until the end of the month. If anything happens to Grandma Eleanor before then, we canโt afford to wait.โ
As she gazed at Nathaniel, excitement thrummed through her. Once the engagement was official, it would be real. She wouldnโt let it stay fake.
By then, her brothers would stand by her, and Nathaniel would have no choice but to marry her.
But for now, she had to stay calm. She needed to make sure the engagement ceremony went off without a hitch.
โOf course, the engagement will proceed as planned,โ Beatrice interjected, beaming as she linked arms with Victoria. โEleanorโs doctor called earlier and mentioned your brother visited. This is wonderful news!โ
โAs for your engagement, donโt worry. Nothing will go wrong. You can even invite your brothers to witness it.โ
Victoria smiled sweetly, but her eyes held something far more complicated.
Evelyn stormed out of the hospital, her strides long and hurried.
โEvelyn!โ
Julian was waiting for her at the entrance. He took one look at her expression and knew something was wrong.
