Chapter 152

"Nathaniel, what are you standing there for? Go help her."

Eleanor shooed him out of her hospital room, making Evelyn sigh. Truthfully, she had been trying to avoid him.

Yet, her steps slowed. She wanted to tell him she was also searching for a doctor for Eleanor.

When she turned to face him, his gaze burned into her.

Meeting his eyes, she asked, "Have you found a specialist yet?"

"No." His reply was slow, deliberate.

Still no luck?

Just as Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, she spotted Victoria stepping out of the elevator.

The air instantly thickened.

Victoria's expression darkened the moment she saw Evelyn. Clearly, she hadnโ€™t expected her to be here.

Taking a sharp breath, Victoria turned to Nathaniel. "Nathaniel, we need to talk."

His brows knitted together in silence.

Evelyn dropped her gaze. "I should go."

She hurried down the hallway, clutching the bag of fruit. She wasnโ€™t even sure why she went that wayโ€”there was no place to cut the fruit there.

Seeing Victoria approach had left her tongue-tied.

If Victoria could secure a doctor, Evelyn wouldnโ€™t mention her own efforts. Otherwise, they might mock her for finding someone inferior to Julian.

Victoria glared at Nathaniel. "Why is Evelyn here?"

"Why are you here?" he shot back, his lips pressed into a thin line.

Her eyes reddened at his sharp tone. "Nathaniel, I came to tell you something important."

Though Julian hadnโ€™t agreed to the surgery yet, Alexander had already given his blessing for their marriage.

All Victoria needed now was to convince Margaret. Despite her grandmotherโ€™s fragile state, she had always doted on her.

If she could persuade Margaret to pressure Julian, he would have no choice but to comply.

But Nathanielโ€™s doubt in her was growing.

So she had come to reassure himโ€”to ask for his patience.

Nathanielโ€™s frown deepened as he turned toward the stairwell.

"I donโ€™t want to hear it."

"Nathaniel, I know youโ€™re upset, but Iโ€™m doing this for you!"

"Lying is for my sake too?"

A flicker of guilt crossed Victoriaโ€™s face. "I admit I was wrong, but Alexander approved our engagement. It wonโ€™t take long for Julian to agree."

"Sure, heโ€™s eccentric, but his skills are world-renowned. Iโ€™ve been working nonstop to get him to operate on Eleanor."

Nathaniel didnโ€™t slow his descent. He had no interest in her excuses.

Victoria stubbornly followed. When she realized he was heading to Eleanorโ€™s doctorโ€™s office, panic surged through her.

Had he found another surgeon? Impossible!

She had to know the truth. No one but Julian would operate on Eleanorโ€”she wouldnโ€™t allow it.

Ignoring her, Nathaniel pushed open the doctorโ€™s door.

Inside, Julian had just finished reviewing the medical records and was about to leave.

Hearing the door open, he assumed it was Evelyn. But when he turned, Nathaniel stood there instead.
