Chapter 130

The disapproval radiating from Julian Montgomery toward Nathaniel Whitmore had only grown more intense with each passing day.

Evelyn Carter stirred awake, the sharp scent of hospital antiseptic instantly telling her where she was.

She was still in the hospital.

Still, she felt better.

Julianโ€™s recommended medicine had clearly worked.

"Ms. Carter, you're awake. Would you like help to the restroom, or should I bring you something to eat?"

Evelyn blinked at the unfamiliar woman beside her. "Who are you?"

"I'm Margaret O'Connor, the caregiver your family arranged for you."

It must have been Julianโ€™s doing.

Her stomach growled. "Could you get me some broth? Something light, please."

Just then, Julian walked in, carrying a food container. "Evelyn, you must be hungry. I brought you lunch."

Evelyn gestured to Margaret. "Julian, didnโ€™t you already send Ms. O'Connor to get me food?"

Julian frowned. "I didnโ€™t hire a caregiver for you."

Evelyn turned to Margaret. "Are you sure you have the right patient?"

Margaret checked her notes. "No mistake. You're Evelyn Carter in bed three."

"Then," Evelyn pressed, "who hired you? Did they leave a name?"

"Yes. The last name was Whitmore."

Nathaniel?

Evelynโ€™s pulse jumped. Nathaniel had arranged this? A storm of questions swirled in her mindโ€”why would he do that?

At the mention of Nathanielโ€™s name, Julianโ€™s expression turned icy.

It was obvious Nathaniel had his own agenda. Hiring a caregiver for Evelyn only confirmed it.

Julianโ€™s voice was steel. "Your services arenโ€™t needed here. You can leave."

Annoyed, Margaret quickly dialed the person who had hired her. "Hello, I just spoke with Ms. Carter in bed three."

"She insists she doesnโ€™t need a caregiver. Make sure Iโ€™m paid for the time Iโ€™ve already spent."

On the other end, Robert Chambers sounded confused. "Why would she refuse? Itโ€™s mealtime. Did you at least make sure she ate?"

"She seemsโ€ฆ close with Dr. Montgomery," Margaret remarked. "Since heโ€™s handling her meals, an extra caregiver isnโ€™t necessary."

Her tone turned pointed. "Ms. Carter must be special. Dr. Montgomery is highly respected here, yet Iโ€™ve never seen him this attentive with any other patient."

Robertโ€™s stomach twisted. How was he supposed to relay this to Nathaniel?

After settling Margaretโ€™s payment, Robert returned to the office, where Nathaniel was buried in paperwork.

Robert hesitated. How to break this gently?

Noticing his assistantโ€™s unease, Nathaniel glanced up. "Problem?"

Robert cleared his throat. "Ms. O'Connor reached out about compensation."

"Does that mean Evelynโ€™s being discharged early?"

"Not exactly. Itโ€™sโ€ฆ complicated. You should hear the recording." Robert handed over his phone, bracing himself.

The tension in the room thickened as Nathaniel listened.

His grip tightened on the phone. He had underestimated Evelynโ€™s appeal.

No wonder the doctor had been so hostile toward him.

"Dig up everything on that doctor," Nathaniel ordered coldly.

As Robert took the phone back, an incoming call flashedโ€”Grandma.

Nathaniel answered. "Hello, Grandma."

"Nathaniel, isnโ€™t it time for Evelynโ€™s prenatal check-up?"
