Chapter 249

Evelyn instinctively tensed, preparing for impact that never came.

Strong hands caught her from both sides, preventing what could have been a disastrous tumble.

A cold dread washed over her. The thought of harming the precious life within her made her stomach churn.

Realizing how reckless she'd been confronting Walter and Beverly, Evelyn mentally chastised herself.

She tried pulling free, but both men maintained their firm grip.

The air grew thick with unspoken tension.

After a silent exchange between Nathaniel and Jonathan, they finally released her. Smoothing her dress, Evelyn murmured, "Thank you."

Jonathan flashed his trademark grin. "Don't mention it. Workplace injuries are terrible for our insurance premiums."

Evelyn's lips quirked despite herself. "Wouldn't want to bankrupt the studio with my clumsiness."

Nathaniel's jaw tightened as he watched their easy banter, his gaze turning glacial when it landed on Jonathan.

Noticing Nathaniel's expression, Jonathan added, "Mr. Whitmore, we appreciate your assistance today."

Nathaniel nearly choked on his own breath. Since when did this outsider get to thank him for helping his own wife?

Evelyn quickly intervened. "Yes, Mr. Whitmore, your quick reflexes were most appreciated."

Nathaniel's eyes darkened. "That's all?"

Surely she had more to say?

Evelyn hesitated before offering, "My deepest gratitude?"

Nathaniel's patience snapped. "Evelyn, are you seriously going to let this engagement proceed without comment? Nothing at all?"

Hadn't she personally designed the entire venue?

This was some performance indeed!

Now she couldn't even pretend to care? Was she that eager to see him with another woman?

Meeting Nathaniel's intense gaze, Evelyn felt a confusing mix of emotions she couldn't - wouldn't - decipher.

She lowered her lashes. "Actually, there is one thing."

Nathaniel stilled, waiting.

"If you're satisfied with the engagement venue design, please ensure timely payment of the final installment. We accept Venmo transfers."

The words hung in the suddenly frigid air.

Nathaniel's face turned stormy. In all his years, no woman had ever provoked him like this.

Evelyn Carter had just made history.

Collecting her things, Evelyn turned to leave.

Jonathan, ever the peacemaker, added, "Congratulations on your engagement, Mr. Whitmore."

"Get out!" Nathaniel's control was hanging by a thread.

Not risking further provocation, Jonathan made a hasty exit.

Without looking back, Evelyn departed with the rest of the studio team.

Back at her workstation, Evelyn tried to focus on her sketches, assuming the engagement festivities must be concluding by now.

An unexpected sting behind her eyelids made her blink rapidly.

Checking the time, she informed Jonathan, "I need to replace my phone. I'm heading out now."

"Let me drive you. I'm wrapping up here too."

"Everyone worked hard today - let's cancel the team dinner and reconvene tomorrow."

"Really, Jonathan. I'll take a cab. You've been burning the midnight oil all week - get some rest."

Jonathan persisted, "I'm fine, Evelyn. With those facial injuries, I'd feel better seeing you home safely."

The concern in his voice was unmistakable.
