Chapter 7

Nathaniel had never imagined marrying Evelyn. But since he had, he could have overlooked her humble originsโ€”as long as she remembered her place. Money was no issue for him, after all.

Yet, time and again, she had stirred trouble. Now, she didnโ€™t even bother pretending. Her true nature was laid bare.

Nathaniel should have felt relieved. But when he saw her signature on the divorce papers, an inexplicable frustration coiled in his chest.

Evelynโ€™s eyes held a quiet sorrow. She feigned indifference, refusing to let Nathaniel crush her dignityโ€”even in defeat.

Victoria, sensing the tension, smirked. "Evelyn, signing so quicklyโ€”did you already find someone else?"

Nathanielโ€™s expression darkened. His gaze sharpened, scrutinizing her.

Evelyn met his distrust with defiance. "Of course. If my new man is better, why cling to the past?"

Fury flashed in Nathanielโ€™s eyes. "Were you cheating while spending my money?"

She glanced at the discarded clothes on the floor. "Iโ€™ll return them."

She had only taken the modest pieces, leaving the designer bags untouched.

Nathaniel didnโ€™t spare them a look. His voice was ice. "Youโ€™re wearing clothes I bought too."

"Iโ€™ll return those as well."

His glare could freeze fire. Meanwhile, Victoria discreetly pulled out her phone, eager to capture the drama.

Evelyn steeled herself. She unbuttoned her blouse slowly, exposing her collarbones, the hint of cleavage beneath.

Nathanielโ€™s breath hitched. He hadnโ€™t expected her to go this far.

"Enough!" he snarled. "Youโ€™re shameless, Evelyn Carter. Get out. I never want to see you again!"

He stormed back into the villa, his back rigid with fury.

Evelyn stopped, a bitter smile touching her lips. He had demanded this.

Her palms were damp. She had been ready to burn everything down.

Victoria lowered her phone, disappointed. "Even if you strip, whoโ€™d want to watch? No rich man would waste his time on trash like you."

She sneered. "Stay in your lane, peasant. Stop dreaming above your station."

Evelyn clutched her bag, swallowing the lump in her throat. Sometimes, she envied those born with silver spoons.

When bullied, she fantasized about a powerful family swooping in to defend her.

But life wasnโ€™t a fairy tale. Even if her real family found her now, it was too late.

Thenโ€”a deafening roar.

A helicopter landed on the lawn.

Nathaniel, watching from the doorway, froze as armed bodyguards marched toward Evelyn.

They bowed. "Ms. Carter, weโ€™re here to take you home."
