Chapter 446

Nathaniel stormed out without another word.

Christopher Montgomery seethed with fury. Never in his life had he encountered such blatant arrogance. If it weren't for Evelyn, he would've handled Nathaniel himself.

Victoria Sinclair's pulse quickened at Nathaniel's words. Still, uncovering Evelyn's true identity was paramountโ€”she needed to know if the Montgomery family had any suspicions.

Hurrying after Christopher, she feigned concern. "Mr. Montgomery, you seem quite close with Evelyn. Actually, she's also very familiar with Julian."

Christopher stopped abruptly. His gaze darkened as he looked down at her. "What exactly are you implying?"

"Nothing! I'm just... curious." She forced a light laugh. "You all live in Nord City, donโ€™t you? When did you get to know Evelyn? How did you meet?"

It clicked in Christopherโ€™s mindโ€”Victoria was probing. He remembered the piano piece earlier, the same melody Evelyn had learned as a child in the orphanage.

Since Victoria had come from the same place, recognizing the tune wasnโ€™t surprising. But had she started doubting Evelynโ€™s identity?

Still, Christopher had always found it suspicious that Alexander had brought Victoria home instead of Evelyn.

Heโ€™d never found concrete evidence, but now, the perfect opportunity to investigate had fallen into his lap.

Raising a brow, he countered, "Why does that concern you?"

Victoria plastered on a smile. "Actually, I noticed Evelyn seems unusually close to Julian. There might be something between them, though I heard heโ€™s been seeing a singer lately."

She sighed dramatically. "Frankly, Evelyn isnโ€™t right for him. Sheโ€™s divorced, and her background is... well, beneath Julianโ€™s. I thought I should talk some sense into her before she gets delusional."

Christopher scoffed. "Youโ€™re lecturing about status, Victoria? Or have you forgotten you were just an orphan before the Montgomerys took you in?"

His voice dripped with disdain. "You donโ€™t exactly hold a high position either. Or have you started believing your own lies?"

Victoriaโ€™s face twisted. For years, sheโ€™d lived comfortably, convincing herselfโ€”and everyone elseโ€”that she was the true Montgomery heiress.

Now, the real daughter had appeared, and the thought of Evelynโ€”the woman she despised mostโ€”being the rightful heir was unbearable.

Christopher noted her reaction. She must have recognized the piano piece earlier, prompting her to dig into his connection with Evelyn.

Yet Victoria quickly masked her panic. "You misunderstand. I was just curious. Why are you acting like Iโ€™ve done something to Evelyn?" She tilted her head. "But does Julian know how close you two are?"

Christopher smirked. "Why would I report my personal connections to Julian? Besides, isnโ€™t he dating that singer now?"

He was deliberately muddying the waters. If Evelyn hadnโ€™t lost her memories due to illness, Victoriaโ€™s deception would have been exposed long ago.

As Christopher walked away, Victoria struggled to steady her breathing. The memory of Evelyn playing that haunting melody echoed in her mind.

She had never felt this unsettled.

Why did it have to be Evelyn of all people?
