Chapter 340
The phone rang sharply in Evelyn's hand.
"We're the police. There's a situation at the Grand Royale Hotel. Could you come over?" The officer's tense voice made her stomach drop.
Something had happened to Christopher.
He hardly ever visited Bern Cityโhe was practically a stranger here!
Heart pounding, she ended the call and bolted from the hospital. She barely registered Nathaniel standing in the hallway as she rushed past him.
His eyebrows shot up when she didn't even acknowledge him. A muscle twitched in his jaw as he watched her retreating figure. What could possibly make her this frantic?
It couldn't be Julianโhe'd just finished examining Eleanor an hour ago and was currently on break.
So who had called Evelyn?
The cab ride to the Grand Royale felt endless.
A cluster of stern-faced people stood outside the penthouse suite, blocking the doorway like sentinels. But to her surprise, they parted to let her through without a word.
Her pulse thundered in her ears as she stepped inside.
Two uniformed officers stood in the lavish living room.
And there, perched on the velvet sofa like a queen holding court, sat a stunning woman in a silk robeโwith Christopher beside her, his expression stormy.
Evelyn approached cautiously. "What's going on?"
Had they fought because of some misunderstanding?
Christopher exhaled sharply. "Nothing serious. The police just needed a family member since I'm from out of town."
The beautiful woman scoffed before he finished. "Nothing serious? Explain yourself, Christopher Montgomery! Did you come to Bern City for business or pleasure? I expected some cheap fling, not thisโ"
"Enough!" His voice turned glacial. "You can insult me all you want, but not Evelyn."
Despite his playboy reputation, no one disparaged his cousin in his presence.
His frown deepened. "And take that back. What's 'cheap' about Evelyn? She's compassionate, intelligent, and beautiful."
Evelyn's cheeks burned at the unexpected praise. How could he say such things so boldly when his girlfriend looked like she'd stepped off a magazine cover?
"So you admit it!" The woman's voice turned shrill. "After less than a month together, you're already chasing someone new?"
This was spiraling out of control. Evelyn intervened quickly. "Miss, you're mistaken. He's my cousin. It's not what you think."
The woman let out a bitter laugh. "Save your lies! I used the same 'cousin' excuse to get with him initially. If you think you can steal him using the same trick, think again!"
An awkward silence fell over the room.
Christopher stood abruptly. "We're done here. It's over. Leave."
Tears welled in the woman's eyes. "Christopher, you can't do this! You know how much I care about you!"
Evelyn couldn't let their relationship end because of her. She'd never forgive herself.
She touched Christopher's arm. "This is because of my message this morning, isn't it? She's misinterpreting our relationship."
He pulled out his phone to checkโbut Evelyn's name wasn't in his recent messages.
