Chapter 90
"Penelope, if Nathaniel faces any issues in the future, you must inform me right away - particularly if it involves Evelyn."
"Victoria, don't worry. I won't let that street rat remain in the Whitmore family. I'll make sure you become my sister-in-law."
Victoria's lips curved into a satisfied smile. "Thank you, Penelope."
"Why thank me? Evelyn and we exist in completely different universes. That gutter trash doesn't deserve to be Nathaniel's wife. She's just some orphan who got lucky marrying into our family."
Victoria's smile deepened. Exactly. Only she was worthy of Nathaniel Whitmore.
Several days later, Evelyn unexpectedly encountered Victoria outside her design studio.
They went to the cafรฉ downstairs for coffee.
Victoria cut straight to the chase. "Have you finalized the divorce with Nathaniel yet?"
Knowing exactly why Victoria had sought her out, Evelyn remained composed. "I've already texted him about finalizing our divorce."
"What was his response?"
"He said he's too busy with work to deal with it right now."
Victoria's perfectly manicured nails dug into her palm. "Evelyn, if I discover you're lying to me, you'll regret it."
Without missing a beat, Evelyn pulled out her phone and showed Victoria the message thread with Nathaniel. "See for yourself if you don't believe me. The proof is right here."
As Victoria scanned the messages, her unease grew visibly.
Evelyn pocketed her phone. "Instead of wasting energy threatening me, you'd be better off speaking to Nathaniel directly."
Victoria forced a tight smile. "I'm aware of his schedule. Nathaniel's been swamped with a major corporate merger. I'll discuss this with him soon. I trust you'll make the right choice when the time comes."
With that, Evelyn stood and left.
Victoria's mind raced as she recalled the text exchange. Why was Nathaniel delaying the divorce? Even after seeing Evelyn with another man at that restaurant?
Could Nathaniel possibly have feelings for that nobody? Impossible!
Leaving the cafรฉ in a hurry, Victoria drove straight to Whitmore Corporation. She needed answers immediately.
She marched past reception and planted herself in Nathaniel's office, waiting impatiently.
Soon, Nathaniel returned from his meeting, his expression darkening when he saw her. "What are you doing here?"
Victoria glanced meaningfully at Robert. "Nathaniel, we need to talk privately."
Robert took the hint and exited, closing the door behind him.
Nathaniel checked his watch. "You have sixty seconds."
"You and Evelyn signed divorce papers ages ago. When are you making it official?"
Nathaniel's eyes turned glacial. "That's none of your concern."
Victoria's smile faltered. "Nathaniel, you know how I feel about you. I've waited three years for you."
"I never asked you to wait."
"Are you still punishing me for missing our wedding three years ago? My brothers locked me in the house that day! If I'd been there, Evelyn would never have entered your life!"
Nathaniel massaged his temples. "That's irrelevant. Stop wasting your time."
Victoria's stomach dropped as she remembered Evelyn's messages. She'd never give up on Nathaniel!
Taking a steadying breath, she played her trump card. "Nathaniel, my brother agreed to operate on your grandmother - on one condition!"
