Chapter 146
Nathaniel's gaze darkened as Evelyn walked away.
Robert cleared his throat nervously. "Mr. Whitmore, how should I handle this document?"
Nathaniel barely glanced at him. "It's yours to deal with. Figure it out yourself."
Robert swallowed hard. This was shaping up to be one of the most stressful days of his career.
When Evelyn arrived home, Nathaniel's mention of finding a new doctor resurfaced in her mind. She was deeply concerned about Eleanor's upcoming surgery.
But in the chaos of leaving the hospital, she had forgotten to ask him for details.
Then she rememberedโJulian had connections in the medical field. Maybe he could help.
Eleanor's health was deteriorating. Time was running out.
Without hesitation, she dialed Julian's number.
"Julian, do you have a minute?"
"Of course. What's wrong?"
"Remember when I told you about my friend's grandmother needing surgery? You mentioned you knew someone who could help?"
"Yeah, but didn't you say your friend already found a surgeon?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"That was the plan, but things fell through. Now we're back to square one."
"Got it. No problem. Give me the details when I get home."
"Thank you."
Relief washed over her as she hung up. Maybe there was still hope.
She spent the rest of the evening waiting for Julian, even preparing his favorite pasta as a late-night snack.
The moment Julian walked in, the aroma of food greeted him. His face lit up instantly.
He snapped a quick photo of the meal, ready to brag in the family group chatโEvelyn had cooked for him.
After washing up, he took a seat.
"So, tell me about your friend's grandmother's condition."
He needed all the facts before committing to anything.
Evelyn explained Eleanor's condition in detail. Having been her caretaker, she knew every symptom, every complication.
Julian listened while eating, but his expression grew increasingly serious with each word.
"This isn't a routine procedure."
"Exactly. That's why finding the right surgeon has been impossible. And now, with time running out..."
He nodded slowly. "I can make this work."
"Really? You know someone qualified?"
Julian froze. He had almost slipped up.
Quickly, he recovered. "Yeah. A friend of mine specializes in this kind of surgery. Donโt worryโyour friendโs grandmother will be in good hands."
"Thatโs a huge relief."
Evelyn trusted him completely.
But then she hesitated. "Julianโฆ could I meet your friend? Or at least know who they are? The situation is urgent."
Julianโs fork stilled mid-air.
"Heโsโฆ extremely busy. Meeting wonโt be possible. But if you give me the medical records, Iโll pass them along."
"Weโll schedule the surgery, and heโll handle the rest."
This was the only wayโhelping without revealing himself.
Evelyn bit her lip. She already had Eleanorโs records from her time as a caretaker.
But those files bore Eleanorโs real name.
What if Julian found out?
